Kindergarten News

Wednesday, May 21, 2008—Well…it is hard to believe but another year has flown by!  The students have learned, grown and changed so much since our first day together last August.  Wow!  I know they will all do terrific in 1st grade and I look forward to seeing them continue to grow in all of their skills.  The students visited Mrs. Van Aalst’s room this morning to do an activity with them.  I am very thankful to Mrs. V. for agreeing to do this…because it gave me the opportunity to sit in on part of the Middle School Awards Program for Alec.  We worked on numeral handwriting in their math workbooks and cleaned out desks for the rest of the morning.  This afternoon, we will play some games together, have rest time and free time, visit Mrs. Siebert in Music, and finish our day with our class party!  Fun!

Have a wonderful summer!!!

Tuesday, May 20, 2008—We began our day watching the 2nd half of the Talent Show.  We then went to the commons and courtyard areas and had fun signing each other’s yearbooks with the entire school.  The students should have their yearbook in their backpack this evening.  For math, we worked with the pan balance.  They gave me several suggestions to what we may be able to find in our room that weighed exactly the same.  The students completed a page in their workbook to go along with this as well.  We will finish our day with writing and illustrating about some of our favorite memories of Kindergarten.

The students enjoyed learning in Art and P.E. today.

We helped Ethan celebrate his 6th birthday today.  He will be 6 years old in July.  Happy Early Birthday Ethan!

Monday, May 19, 2008—What a busy…but fun we had today!  We began our day signing yearbooks with our book buddies and enjoying about 10 minutes outside on the playground with them.  We also gave them cards with photos.  We then came back in our classroom and took time to sign each other’s yearbooks.  Tomorrow, the entire school will gather after the Talent Show and sign each other’s yearbooks.  So…tomorrow afternoon you can expect to see your child’s yearbook coming home with them.  J  I have sent home some math Home Links that we did not get to this year, so please feel free to do them whenever this summer.  They do not need to be returned to me.  J  We finished the day watching the Talent Show, eating snack and playing a short game of “Head’s Up 7 Up.”

We helped Trey celebrate his 6th birthday (a few days early) today.  He brought in yummy popsicles to share before our last recess.  Happy Birthday Trey!

The students enjoyed learning in Music, Art and Science today.

Please remember tennis shoes for P.E. tomorrow.

We will start our day watching the 2nd half of the Talent Show tomorrow morning beginning @ 8:45am.

Friday, May 16, 2008—We started our day watching the 8th graders on the stage performing their traditional 8th Grade Tribute.  This was a fun show (although there were some tears in the audience…as we have to watch them move onto high school).  For math, the students completed a subtraction page.  For group reading, we read the big book of Kathy’s Pocket by Helen Lester.  We finished the day with a trip to the Eagle’s Nest for the last time this year.  Fun!

The students enjoyed learning in P.E., Spanish and Computer today.

Thursday, May 15, 2008—We reviewed consonant digraphs, special endings (-ed and –ing) and contractions in phonics this morning.  The students also wrote about what their favorite weather is on the back page.  I am going to place these in their portfolios to showcase their writing progress throughout the year.  For math, we are working on numeral handwriting in their math workbooks.  We will also play a game called “Number Gymnastics,” where the students will have to figure out the number that I am thinking of as I give them different characteristics of each number.  We will take our last spelling test of the year early this afternoon.  Hooray!!!  We will finish the day with the Author’s Circle.  The kids are excited to show off their work and I believe are quite prepared to read and share with you.  I hope many of you are able to make it.

The students enjoyed learning in Library and Science today.

Please remember tennis shoes for P.E. tomorrow.

We will enjoy watching the 8th graders perform on the stage tomorrow morning beginning @ 8:35am.  They will be doing their final performance @ TCS…which has become an 8th Grade Tribute tradition.

Wednesday, May 14, 2008—The students completed review pages for phonics this morning.  They were given the option of doing the front page with me.  I asked for all of them to try the back page on their own.  After this, they wrote a page for their journals.  Today, the topic was:  “My friends are special because…”.  For math, I introduced the students to “Function Machines.”  This is a concept using addition and subtraction.  They will work with this more in 1st grade.  We had fun practicing spelling words in shaving cream.  For group reading, we read a literature set of Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw.  This afternoon, Mrs. Shinn will come and do the last Character Counts lesson for the year with the class.  We will finish the day with a tally and graphing sheet about different Australian animals.

We welcomed Cole into our classroom this afternoon for a visit.  We hope to see him in our school next year!  J

The students enjoyed learning in Music.  They did not have Spanish, as Mrs. Gutierrez was out of the building today.

Please remember any library books that you may still have at your house.  Also, I hope to see many of you at the Author’s Circle tomorrow afternoon beginning @ 3:00pm.
