“We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”

GREETINGS FROM THE MUSIC ROOM!

It is May and school is almost over!  The above quote has been one of my bulletin boards this year and it is one of my favorite sayings.  We’ve made some music and dreamed some dreams and it has been a pleasure working with your children!

The Prekindergarten and Kindergarten classes have been continuing to work on quarter notes (tas), eighth notes (titis), keeping a steady beat, melodic patterns (smPreK and sml K) and reviewing dynamics (p-quiet, f-loud). We learned a song and a “shuffle” about the “Six Pillars of Character” and also the “Kite Song”.  Kindergartners put movement to the “Sing a Rainbow” song with brightly colored scarves and they’ve had their introduction to “Mallet Madness”.  We are now singing songs about summertimeJ!

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders did a wonderful job in “Mary Poppins” which they presented to a packed house in Assembly Hall on April 10.  Every child had their “moment on stage” and I think the students and I are still singing the songs (parents, too?) Thank you so much to all who helped with props, stage and costumes!

The fifth grade classes have been using their imaginations and musical knowledge to create commercials.  Each group came up with a product, wrote a script, created a jingle and added whatever costumes and props they needed to complete their presentation. We taped them in class and enjoyed watching them together (with popcorn, of course!)  We may not be ready to be the big execs in advertising, but we sure had fun and learned something about putting together a persuasive presentation that included music.

The Lamb, Martinez and MacDonald homerooms meet for music once as a group of 45 and once as single homeroom class. They are working on music and a bit of script for a concert on May 19th at 7:00 p.m. in Assembly Hall called “Radio Live”.  The Youth Choir will also perform at this program.

Speaking of the TCS Youth Choir, they participated in the Worlds of Fun Choral Festival on Saturday, April 12.  They sang very well, earning a superior (I) rating and taking first place in their division – we have the trophy to prove it! That made the day very special – being at the park while it was snowing and sleeting (in April!) was not as great!  This next week the choir will be making an audition tape to send in for a possible KMEA appearance next year and preparing music for the May 19th concert.
