Have a wonderful summer! School begins on Wednesday, August 20. See you then! Sixth grade students in Transition math will be receiving a letter next week (the week of August 11) with more details.
Please refer to the Class Procedures document (in the Handouts section of the math binder and also posted on this page below the assignments) for general questions about class procedures.
Assignments below are listed for the day they were assigned. They are due the following day at the beginning of the hour.

Calculator - Graphing calculator (required) and scientific (optional)
Graph paper
Grades will be computed on the basis of percentage of total points accumulated from tests, projects, daily grades, quizzes, and notebook. Grades will be computed as follows:
Over 100% = A+ 74% - 76% = C
96% - 100% = A 70% - 73% = C-
90% - 95% = A- 67% - 69% = D+
87% - 89% = B+ 64% - 66% = D
84% - 86% = B 60% - 63% = D-
80% - 83% = B- Under 60% = F
77% - 79% = C+
CALCULATOR
Students needing to borrow a calculator will need to spend 2 of their daily points to do so. On a test, the cost is 5 points. Bring your calculators!
Students are not allowed to share calculators! Students also should use calculators only when needed for assignment or class use.
Test dates are posted on the website. Students are allowed
to take a test once only; there are no provisions to re-take a test because of
a low score.
A daily grade of 5 points will be awarded to each student every day. In order to receive a 5, the following guidelines must be met:
a. done in pencil.
b. checked in red; correct solutions written in red.
c. has heading, including name and assignment, in upper right corner.
d. is done neatly.
e. all work is shown on assignment paper. (Scratch paper is not used). Each step is shown vertically, with final solution below work. Answers should be circled when work is shown. Skip lines between problems when there are many steps.
f. all 2 dimensional graphs are on graph paper.
g. rulers are used to make straight lines.
One key to a successful experience in UCSMP is learning to study (not just read) each section before beginning the exercises. The following are guidelines for successful studying. Note that steps 3 and 4 are optional.
Step 1. Label notes with lesson number. (These are the notes required in the
“Notes” section of the math notebook.)
Step 2. Copy all bold-faced vocabulary from the lesson. Do not write definitions yet.
Step 3. Begin to read the lesson. As the vocabulary words are encountered, stop and write a meaningful definition in your own words.
Step 4. Study the examples. Work the examples in your notebook without looking at the solution. Check your solution with the book’s to see if you are correct.
Step 5. Complete the assignment on separate paper, showing all work.
Step 6. Check odd answers with back of book. If your answer is correct, you probably understand the problem. If it is incorrect, rework it until you arrive at the correct solution.
Step 7. Make a note of problems for which you will ask clarification. Include any details which will make your question specific. Questions like “I don’t get #5’ are not as meaningful as “Why is #5 negative?”.
Steps 3 and 4 will vary according to individual needs, and are NOT REQUIRED. Some students will not need to write the definitions, and some will understand the examples without working them. Students should use the approach that will maximize their understanding of the material.
