Monday

Class- Students will work in break out sessions to create culture qualities lists related to the Olmec, Maya, and Moundbuilders on North America.

Students created the following:

  • Cities that are centers of trade
  • Specialized jobs
  • Organized forms of government and religion
  • A system of record keeping
  • Advanced tools

Mesoamerican

Olmec

  • Arose around 1200 BC
  • Located near present day Nicaragua to central Mexico
  • Built large cities like La Venta
  • Set up extensive trade routes

 

Maya

  • Arose around 250 AD
  • Located near southern Mexico to Guatemala
  • First people in Americas to create the number 0

 

Hohokam

  • Arose around 300 BC
  • Lived in the American southwest
  • Used extensive irrigation
  • Traded widely
  •  

Anasazi

  • Arose around 100 AD
  • Lived in areas of present day Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico
  • Mainly agricultural
  •  

Moundbuilders

  • Built large earthen structures
  • Two oldest groups are Adena and Hopewell

  • Arose around 400 BC

 

Mississipian

 

  • Arose around 800 AD
