National History Club Meeting

Thanks to those students who attended our November general meeting! Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. and meet the founder of Nat’l History Club, Robert Nasson. I shared some of his advice and guidance with our students at our general meeting today. Our next general meeting is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 5 at 7:45 a.m. Please check my faculty page for updates on Mock Trial, Scholar’s Bowl, and Debate meetings as well.

 Social Studies-Class Summaries

6th Grade- I was pleased with the overall results of our assessments on Mexico. Also, students have been hard at work on our first group presentations of the year, our South American Newscasts.

7th Grade- Students spent much of last month learning about the initial impact of European exploration in the Americas. We have begun to talk about the complex political relationships developing among the Spanish, French, and English. Also, students have been hard at work preparing their “student taught” lessons related to the founding of the 13 colonies.

8th Grade- I enjoyed my time with the students as they studied about Andrew Jackson’s turbulent presidency. His challenge to the Supreme Court regarding the forced removal of American Indians and the National Bank made for some stimulating conversation about the role of the chief executive. Also, students have begun researching their assigned countries for Model UN.

Liberty Memorial Revamped

On December 2, 2006 the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City opened its doors with a new look, and interactive elements. Also, on September 20 of this year, it was designated as a national historic landmark for its role in memorializing World War I service as well as its notable design.
