From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents, Family and Friends,
Wednesday was a very special day for me.
Students surprised me at lunchtime by singing
Happy Birthday and giving me a card and a
birthday crown - the same kind the little
children wear. Then came another wonderful
surprise.
Somewhere there is an "Ice Cream Angel" who
knows how much I love ice cream. That generous
person treated the entire school
to ice cream bars and I got to pass them out.
What a happy day!
When first graders asked me how old I am, I told
them, "I'm as old as all of you put together!"
They went away and did some calculations. Then
they came back and said, "Are you 120?" Not
quite.
When a news reporter asked
my age, I told him the truth. I said, "My wife
made me promise not to tell, but when I'm here,
I feel young!"
Thank you to all the students for their
smiles, their hugs and their
birthday wishes. You make me feel so young.

Halloween at TCS -- October 30 |
Halloween
is always a special day at Topeka Collegiate! Since
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, we will be
celebrating the holiday on October 30.
Parents are invited to attend the Halloween
assembly, which begins at 8:35 a.m. in the gym.
The pre-K and Kindergarten classes will be performing
several songs, followed by a sing-along for all,
including the traditional TCS song "Have You Seen The
Ghost of John?":
Have you seen the ghost of John?
Long white bones with the skin all gone
Ooo, Ooo, Ooo, Ooo, Ooo, Ooo, Ooo
Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on, no skin on?
Plan to stay for the parade, as the
students circle the gym, walk through the courtyard
and return to their classrooms. Most homerooms will
be having a Halloween party at
11:15; please contact your room parent or your
child's teacher if you would like to bring
refreshments or help out in some other way.
When you are helping your child choose his or her
costume, please help them use good judgment in
picking an appropriate theme. Students
should not wear masks or costumes that may
be perceived as being too aggressive, horrific,
gory, violent, or sexually provocative. Within
reason, classical monsters such as Dracula and
Frankenstein are allowed. Children are encouraged
to come to school in costume; if your child will
have to transport the costume to or from school, be
sure that it fits easily into a backpack.
Also, please keep in mind that no weapons of
any kind are allowed on the Topeka
Collegiate campus, not even play weapons.
Friday, October 30th is a half day of school;
classes will be dismissed at noon. No lunch will be
served. Child care will be available from 12:15
p.m. until 5:45 p.m.
Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Halloween is an exciting time
for many families. Eating a good meal prior to
trick-or-treating will discourage children from
filling up on Halloween treats. Take the time to
have a quick meal before the outing begins. These
important safety reminders will help make
trick-or-treating an enjoyable and safe experience
for your family.
-- Costumes should be bright, reflective and
non-flammable.
-- Non-toxic makeup and a decorative hat can be a
safe alternative to a mask, which blocks eyesight.
-- Costumes should be short to prevent tripping.
Shoes should fit well and be comfortable.
-- Carrying a flashlight or glow stick is a good
idea.
-- Remain on well-lit streets and use the sidewalk
or walk at the far edge of the roadway facing
traffic.
-- Remind your child to look both ways before
crossing the street and don't assume the right of
way. Motorists may have trouble seeing them.
-- Remind children to never go inside the home of a
stranger.
-- Encourage your child to
wait until they are back home to enjoy their
treats so you can skim over the candy to make
sure that nothing has been tampered with.
We hope your family has a
howling good time filled with lots of thrills
and plenty of yummy mummy candy.

MEC Movie Night and SeaCamp Fundraiser |
The outdoor movie night on October 3 that was
sponsored by the Multicultural Education Committee
was a lot of fun! We had a nice turn out with
plenty of room for people to either watch a movie,
browse the silent auction items, or just socialize
around a fire pit. Thanks for coming!
Parent Cynthia Einspahr reports that the eighth
graders raised $1,492 towards their trip to Sea Camp
next month from the sales of concessions, pizza, and
the silent auction.
We are all very appreciative of the MEC members and
other friends of TCS who generously donated items to
the auction and made cash donations.

3rd Grade Assembly |
Nickelodeon has nothing on
Topeka Collegiate School! Ms. Kido's and Ms.
Bauer's third grade classes presented "The First
Ever TCS Kids' Choice Awards" at our all-school
assembly on October 16.
Prior to the assembly, third
graders visited each TCS class and asked students to
vote on several categories, including favorite
school tradition, best school song, and worst
homework assignment. During the assembly third
graders presented the nominees in each category and
announced the winners. Kids' Choice Awards is not
complete without slime, and there was plenty
on the stage by the end of the performance!

TCS Quiz Answer:
The correct answer is D.
Four alums have combined the humanitarian ideals
fostered at TCS and the excellent education they

at an excellent education. Watch next week's
