From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents and Friends,
It is my pleasure to introduce four new members to
Topeka Collegiate School's Board of Trustees:
Eva Brown, Michel' Philipp Cole, Mary
Etzel, and Steve Malone. A
heartfelt thank you to departing Board members Pat
Gideon, Cindi Buck,
Kris Chanay, Bill Padgett, and
Francois Henriquez for their commitment
and service to the Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees is a volunteer group of 16 persons.
They are nominated by members of the Board itself and are
generally invited to serve for a three-year term. The Board
has ultimate responsibility for the school. It does so by
raising funds, devising and controlling budgets, serving as
the legally accountable body for Topeka Collegiate School,
appointing a Head of School and setting general school
policy. No board member receives compensation for his/her
participation. Board members are called upon to make
extensive time commitments.
Eva
Brown is a lifelong Kansan. She says our school's
mission statement drew her to explore Topeka Collegiate soon
after her daughter Ella was born. Ella is
now a sixth grader. Eva has volunteered in the lunchroom, in
the classroom, and as a Girl Scout troop co-leader. She is
please to be able to now serve the school as a member of the
board.
Eva graduated from Fort Hays State University, and earned
master's degrees in education, divinity and nursing from
Kansas University. She works as a nurse practitioner in
private practice, which she finds rewarding and challenging.
Eva and her family enjoy hiking, biking, pizza movie nights
at home and traveling together.
 With
more than 25 years of communications experience,
Michel' Philipp Cole serves as Security
Benefit's Vice President of Corporate/Marketing
Communications and Brand Strategy. Prior to joining Security
Benefit, Michel' worked in leadership communications
positions with Fleishman-Hillard, an international public
relations consulting firm, Westar Energy and Goodyear.
Throughout her career, she has helped corporations manage
their reputations and communicate key messages to various
stakeholders. Her areas of specialty include brand
development, internal communications, crisis management and
risk mitigation, media relations and training and executive
support. She also was named Most Valuable Alumnus of the
Washburn University Mass Media Department in 2002.
Michel' and her family -- husband Jim and fifth and fourth
grade sons Jacob and Adam
-- enjoy traveling, working in their flower garden and
sporting events.
Mary
Etzel grew up in the Barton County community of
Claflin, then earned a degree in horticulture at Kansas
State University. She has worked in the OSHA (Occupational
Safety and Health Administration) field, as coordinator for
the Kansas Radon Program, and in entomology. Just ask her
about bees!
Mary has lived in Topeka for seven years. She, husband Noel,
and their two children, first grader Trey
and three-year-old Lydia, enjoy spending time boating on
Lake Perry.
Steve
Malone has 14 years of marketing experience, with
an emphasis in consumer packaged goods. Steve is Associate
Marketing Director for Prescription Diet and Science Diet
brands at Hill's Pet Nutrition. He holds a BA from UCLA and
an MBA from the University of Iowa.
Steve, wife Marsha, second-grader Jack and
Kindergartener Maude live in Lawrence.

Earn Money for TCS Through Everyday Activities! |
|
You can earn money for Topeka Collegiate through everyday
activities like going to the grocery store, searching and
shopping online, and recycling useful products. Click on the
links for more information on participating brands and special
promotions.
www.goodsearch.com -- Each time you use GoodSearch, a
Yahoo!-powered search engine, for your online searches, Topeka
Collegiate receives a cash donation. Be sure to designate
Topeka Collegiate as your designated cause. Since its
inception, your searches have earned us $136!
Box Tops for Education -- For each Box Tops 4
Education coupon you clip and turn in to the office, TCS
receives 10 cents. The Box Tops logo can be found on hundreds
of participating brands from diapers to frozen vegetables to
disposable bags. And if you shop online at the Box Tops
marketplace, a portion of every qualifying purchase (up to 22%)
is donated to our school at no extra cost to you. Participating
online stores include GapKids, Pottery Barn, Hotels.com, and
Lands' End.
Best Choice Labels -- New this school year. When you
purchase Best Choice brand products, clip out and return the UPC
portion (the proof of purchase) to the office. For each bundle
of 1,000 UPCs, our school will earn $30. Topeka-area stores
that carry Best Choice products are Apple Market, Tilton's
Westside, Price Chopper, Perry Lecompton and Oskaloosa
Thriftways, and Checkers.
Campbell's Labels for Education -- You no longer need to
save the entire label - just the UPC code is needed for
redemption. Other brand names besides Campbell's in this
program include Pepperidge Farm, Prego, Swanson, V8, Market
Day, Franco-American, and SpaghettiO's.
Nestlé Pure Life Water Labels -- As part of Nestlé's Go
Play! program, TCS can redeem any size or flavor Nestlé
water bottle labels for sports gear or towards transportation
costs for school field trips.
Office Depot 5% Back to Schools Program -- 5% of your
purchase comes directly to the school in the form of free
supplies. School supplies qualify for the program, while
computers, technology items, and other items do not. Simply
identify TCS as your school choice at the checkout and/or
supply the school ID number: 70039209. Past purchases can
be credited to the school as long as they were made within
the last quarter.
Target Take Charge of Education Program -- Apply and get
approved for a Target REDCard. When you enroll, designate TCS
as your school of choice and Target will send our school a
no-strings-attached check worth up to 1% of your REDCard
purchases at Target and Target.Com. Last year your
purchases earned Topeka Collegiate $538.49!
Recycle your Old Cell Phones, Printer
and Toner Cartridges, Plastic Containers
marked with a 1 or 2 within a triangle, Paper,
Corrugated Cardboard, and Newspapers --
all of these items are collected and redeemed for cash. Please
place old cell phones and printer cartridges in the collection
boxes across from the main office in the teachers' workroom.
Plastic, cardboard, paper, and newspaper may be placed in the
marked Dumpsters on the east side of the campus. Last year
your recycled materials earned the school $105.07!
We'd like to thank Debbie Rosacker for her
past coordination of the label redemption program, and say
welcome and thank you to parent Elena Carrington
for taking over these important fundraisers!

school by clicking on the Parent Council tab on the school

Help Us Be Good Neighbors |
|
Our neighbors have asked us to remind you
that as you drive through our surrounding neighborhood, you note
and obey the 30 m.p.h. speed limit on the residential streets,
and the marked 20 m.p.h. school zones around the schools. They
(and we) are concerned for the safety of our students and the
neighborhood children.
TCS parents are also reminded to not use
the Crestview United Methodist Church parking lot on
Eveningside Drive. This parking lot is for the church and
their day care parking only.
Thank you for helping us be good
neighbors!
