From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents, Families and Friends,
It has been cold and we've had a lot of snow
this month, with only a few sunny days. But the
climate is always warm inside school. If you
have a case of the winter blahs, come spend some
time here with our children and teachers. You
can't help but feel better!
Please remember to complete and return your
reenrollment agreement no later than March
12. Under the guidance of Staff Development
Director Sonja Czarnecki and Lower School
Coordinator Dené Mosier, we are seeing an increased
level of collaboration among our teachers. Peer
mentoring and observation have helped teachers
expand their roles outside their own classrooms,
contributing to a positive learning environment for
your children.
Remember that Discovery Day has
been rescheduled for Sunday, February 28 from
1:00 to 3:00 p.m. If your child is entering Jr. Pre-K,
Pre-K or Kindergarten, come to Rumble in the Jungle,
spend time with teachers, and learn more about our Early
Childhood Program. Feel free to bring friends. Just let
Admissions Director Linda Kehres
know at
lkehres@topekacollegiate.org.
I would like to welcome our two
new board members (details below), and thank them
for their willingness to give our students the benefit
of their wisdom and hard work. They join a board that
has displayed a sincere understanding of our mission,
reflected not only in our school community, but in our
growing community of alumni.
We're excited about the upcoming
auction on Saturday, March 6. For the first time,
we're hosting this important event at school. It's a
perfect opportunity to bring Topeka into Topeka
Collegiate, and let others experience the warmth and
community spirit. If you haven't bought your auction
tickets yet, there's still time. The easiest way is
online at Auction
Reservations or just bring a
check to school.
See you at the auction!

Board Welcomes New Trustees |
|
The Board of Trustees welcomes two
new members, seated at the February meeting. They are
John F. (1st grader James) and
Stephanie V. (3rd grader Baker and 5th
grader Bryce).

John F. was born and raised in
Kansas City, Missouri. He earned his B.A. degree at
Ottawa University in Liberal Arts and Psychology, and an
M.A. degree in Counseling and Guidance from the
University of Missouri at Kansas City. John worked with
families in crisis for six years in Kansas City
before earning his J.D. degree from Washburn Law
School. He is now an attorney in private practice
specializing in criminal and traffic cases. He and his
wife Mako are part owners of Chez Yasu French
Restaurant.
Stephanie V.'s passion for designing led her to a
Fine Arts degree in Textile Design from the
University of Kansas. For 12 years she worked as an
interior designer at Linda Lee Interiors in Topeka
and also as the production director of The Sewing
Workshop Pattern Collection, a boutique line of
clothing patterns sold throughout the United States.
She is the author of two sewing books, Sensational
Sachets and Embellishments A to Z, both by Taunton
Press. Stephanie currently is a realtor with V. Inc.
Realtors. She and her husband John own V. Self

We appreciate Mr. F. and Mrs. V.'s commitment to
helping our school through their service on the
Board of Trustees.

discovering the fun side of math with tessellations and
fractals in patterns.
We'll also explore cultures from around the world by
discovering the link between ancient games and those we
play today. As always, students will have the
opportunity to take apart a broken machine, see what's
inside, and make a new creation out of the parts.

"Why We Choose Collegiate" |
|
A Topeka Collegiate Board of Trustees member
received the following email from Rich W., parent of
first grader Trinity B., after the February 19th
Schwerdt/Frederick assembly. With permission, we
are sharing it with you.
"I just returned from the first grade
program, and as is typical, I am amazed at the
opportunities provided to the students of Topeka
Collegiate. I am in awe of the personal development
of these children and the ability and skill to stand
on stage at the age of seven with no fears
whatsoever, sing dance, and in Trinity's case mouth
every line to the program, with no apprehension,
trepidation or fear. I was educated in public
schools but I honestly feel that the academic,
cultural, and developmental opportunities provided
to the students at Collegiate are beyond compare.
"Not only was I amazed, and emotionally touched as I
reflected on Trinity's performance, but seeing the
other students throughout the school and hearing
about their academic accomplishments was more than
impressive. It is times like this that reinforce my
decision to choose Collegiate.
"I have always felt that it takes a very special
person to be a teacher. For those who have the skill
set to do it well it is readily apparent that the
reason they do it because they make a difference and
shape the lives of our children. This fact could not
be more obvious with the teaching staff at
Collegiate."

Laura N. is Runner-Up in County Spelling Bee |

Sixth grader Laura N.
(pictured at left at the conclusion of the
TCS spelling bee)placed second in the
Shawnee County Spelling Bee on Saturday,
February 20. In a spell-off with a seventh
grade competitor for the runner-up position,
Laura successfully spelled morgue
and clinched the position.
Because the first place speller is
unable to advance to the regional
competition due to a previously-planned
family trip, Laura has the right to move
on in the contest; however, because her
family has also planned a trip for the
day the regional competition is held,
she may not be able to compete at
regionals, either. Regardless, we are
all proud of Laura's success thus far
and congratulate her on her
achievements!

Volunteer Spotlight On Bob M. |
|
Thank you to Bob M., father of
8th grader Austin M., for getting our large
riding floor scrubber up and running again.
Bob noticed it was not being used, and took the
initiative to test the six batteries, replacing the
one that was defective. He also replaced the front
wheel after searching extensively for the part.
This is an example of a parent
with a particular skill set seeing a need and
meeting it. Bob has helped lighten our maintenance
staff's load by enabling them to use the large
scrubber instead of the smaller push model. He's
also made it possible for us to keep the gym floor
much cleaner, particularly with all the use it gets
in the winter months.
Thanks, Bob!

Around Campus |
(Right) Topeka Collegiate's library is very
fortunate to have a handpainted mural on the wall. It
was created by library volunteer Dixie Norman, and it
contains characters from many of the books we have in
our library. She worked on it off and on from October to
the end of January, for approximately 20 hours. In the
past, Dixie has made dolls, volunteered at the Topeka
Public Library, the museum, and here at Collegiate.
Unfortunately, Dixie is no longer volunteering at
Collegiate, but her mural and beautiful artwork lives
on. -- Jan Allison

A Note From Your Parent Council |
|
You may have noticed some major
improvements in our classroom technology over the past
couple of months. We now have new teacher laptops and
projectors in the classrooms provided by funds from the
Capital Campaign, and classrooms with
SmartBoard/Interactive hardware and software provided by
funds raised through Parent Council events and
activities.
A big thanks to all those who have contributed to
the Capital Campaign and supported Parent Council
events and activities: skating parties, the hayrack
ride/bonfire, the book fair, and purchased TCS
spiritwear. A special thanks to Joe Anderson,
Debbie Gibson, Leslie Ham, Tammy Schmidt and Rehana
Syed for organizing these Parent Council events and
activities. Working together, we have all
made a difference in our classrooms!
Thanks for your support now and in the future as
we all continue to improve our children's
learning experience step by step!

The New Digital Piano Is Here! |
Mrs.
Siebert is happy to announce that there is a new digital
piano at Topeka Collegiate!
The piano story started last spring when the 2009 8th
grade class donated their class gift of $500 to the
music department, hoping to be able to improve the sound
of the grand piano in Assembly Hall.
Unfortunately the grand piano is old enough that
retuning it successfully was not possible and so Mrs.
Siebert decided to look at other options. Replacing the
grand piano would require a prohibitive amount of money,
so another kind of instrument became the focus of the
search. Because our all-school programs require us to
use the gym instead of Assembly Hall, we are often left
without a piano unless we try to move the very heavy
upright piano used for after school lessons out of the
classroom to other locations. A moveable quality
instrument would not only remedy the all-school program
situation, but also could be used in Assembly Hall in
place of the grand piano if necessary.
We began our search here in Topeka, but were not able to
find what we needed and ended up purchasing the new
Yamaha Clavinova from Kansas City. Of course this
instrument exceeded the $500 initially given by the 8th
grade class, but thanks to additional donations from the
Greene, Schwerdt, Schneider, Blum, Dykes, Nicolae, and
Carrington families and one donor wishing to remain
anonymous, the dream became a reality. |
|
From the Health Room |
|
Donations of used pants, shirts,
socks, and underwear (especially in small sizes) are
always welcomed for children who need to change clothes
during the day. If you have items that you no longer
need, please drop them off in the office or in
the health room.
Incidentally, if your child has come home wearing
clothing loaned to him or her, please launder and return
those items to school so that we may be prepared for the
next emergency quick change! Thank you! |

Middle schoolers completed the final community
