From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents, Families and Friends,
We have had a full week of
school with some sunshine for a change! Some classroom
teachers even had to pull their window shades because of
the sun's refection off of the snow.
I
want to thank everyone for great first semester. I am
looking forward to an even better second semester.
I want to thank Director of Staff Development Sonja
Czarnecki, Lower School Coordinator Dené Mosier and
others for planning a great half-day of training on how
to use our new technology to support our teachers' great
instruction and create a challenging, engaging education
environment for our students. The first day back from
winter break, teachers met with their colleagues in a
series of technology workshops that demonstrate the
growth of peer mentoring and collaboration in our
community.
Thank you to Technology Director David Zlotky and
Support Staffer Karen Benson, who spent most of their
winter break getting our new LCD projectors and laptop
computers ready for our staff.
This is a very important semester for Topeka Collegiate.
The new technology is creating new excitement in the
classroom:
"During geography, I am no longer climbing on
furniture to point things out on wall-mounted maps. The
children instead delight in finding new countries on
interactive maps!"
-
Dené Mosier
2nd Grade Teacher
Assistant Head of School Carl
Tillona is back and will be with us until May 1,
when he will return to Massachusetts to complete his
administrative certification requirements and rejoin
his family.
Topeka
Collegiate has a great spring semester planned. I
encourage you to attend as many activities as you
can. I repeat what I said at the beginning of this
school year: You only walk down this road of
education with your child one time and Topeka
Collegiate is here to assist you in your commitment
to providing a great education for your child.
Educationally yours,
Dick Patterson
Head of School

Students Reflect on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream |
|
In observance of Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day, middle school students submitted essays,
poetry, and artwork to competitions sponsored by the
Topeka-based organization Living The Dream, Inc. The
theme of this year's contest was "Love and
Nonviolence."
Winners in each category have been announced, and we
are delighted and proud to have four Topeka Collegiate
students among those who placed in the top three in two
categories:
Skyler D. (7th grade) - 1st
place, 8th grade art
Sofia K. (6th grade) - 2nd place,
5th-6th grade essay
Maria K. (8th grade) - 1st place,
8th grade essay
Sarah S. (6th grade)- 3rd place,
5th 6th grade essay
(Left to right: Sarah
S., Maria K.,

The students were recognized at a ceremony Friday
morning at the Topeka Performing Arts Center.
Excerpts from the essays follow. Skyler's artwork
will be displayed at Topeka Collegiate when it
becomes available.
For more information on Living the Dream, Inc. visit
their web site at
www.ltdtopeka.com
"Diversity" -- Sofia K.
". . .Humans should learn to agree to disagree with
an open mind. Hate is diminished when we learn to
listen and respect. The world becomes a safer place
when ideas are shared instead of forced. Not one
single individual should be more important than
another and no individual should suffer at the hands
of another."
"Diversity - The Quilt of Humanity" -- Maria K.
". . .I believe that every human being in this world
deserves the chance to try and stitch together a
quilt of humanity, because if you get right down to
it, all people deserve the chance to be accepted and
comfortable in the society they live in."
"Differences in Life" -- Sarah S.
". . .If we work together as a group, we can be a
stronger world. We should embrace each other like a
loving family. A family can support you when you are
afraid or fearful. Your family can even be your best
friends. Everyone can make up your family."

TCS Quiz |
|
How are funds raised at the annual auction used?
A) Non-budgeted "extras"
B) Day-to-day school operations
C) The building fund
D) All of the above
Answer: B
Auction proceeds go into the operating
budget, which pays for the day-to-day
running of the school. The money raised on
Auction Night March 6 helps fund this
year's budget, which pays for teacher
and staff salaries, utilities, books and
educational materials, financial aid,
professional development, building
maintenance and supplies, and everything
else that goes into the operation of the
school.
Together with Annual Fund, the
auction pays for 10-12 percent of our operating
budget. That's why your support is so important.
We're delighted that for the first time in Topeka
Collegiate history, the auction will be at school.
This is exciting because it brings this major
fundraising effort "home" to the place we all
treasure, and helps remind us why we're together.

Keith Ulmer '93 "Returns" to TCS |
|
In 1993, Keith Ulmer and
six classmates graduated from Topeka Collegiate. Today,
fewer than 20
years later, he is part of an elite international team
of scientists working on the Large Hadron Collider
project, described as "the biggest physics experiment in
history." The project seeks to find answers to the
question "How was the universe created?"
In between his Topeka Collegiate
days and his exciting work on the LHC, Keith graduated
from Topeka High School and Amherst College, and earned
his master's and doctorate degrees in physics from the
University of Colorado at Boulder.
Dr. Keith Ulmer is dividing his
time these days between Colorado and Switzerland, site
of the LHC. This week, he took time from his work to pay
a virtual visit to his old school.
Keith spoke with middle school
students in a teleconference, explaining particle
physics in easy-to-understand terms. The students were
fascinated and took the opportunity to ask a variety of
questions
including "What's your favorite
part?" His answer: "I get to try to figure out the way
the world works. I'm lucky to be here at the time when
the machine is turned on and generating data. I also get
to work with people from all over the world."
The youngest questioner was second
grader Dylan C., (above) who
has a special interest in the Large Hadron Collider, and
asked to come to the videoconference.

Safe Dates Curriculum to be Presented to 8th Graders |
|
Eighth grade students will soon be
involved in a program called Safe Dates during their
Leadership class. This effective, research-based program
targets the attitudes and behaviors associated with
dating abuse, and teaches adolescents the skills needed
to build healthy, respectful relationships.
Dating abuse can be a significant problem for teens as
young as middle school. Safe Dates helps teens more
clearly define what a healthy dating relationship is and
what dating abuse is. It helps teens understand the
causes and consequences of dating abuse, as well as the
key ways to prevent abuse from happening.
Safe Dates does not promote dating; rather, it prepares
the children for the future when he or she may be
dating. Learning boundaries and respect are key in any
relationships, including friendships. The Safe
Dates curriculum does not include sexually explicit
content; we'll be talking about sexual assault, but in
more general terms. The goal of this program is to help
teens be safe as they develop healthy relationships with
friends.
Laura Burton, Public Educator at the YWCA, hosted an
informational meeting for all eighth grade parents to
learn more about the Safe Dates curriculum. Parents
received a packet of helpful information and
conversation starters to help ease the discussion with
their teenager.
If you should have any questions about the Safe Dates
program or dating abuse in general, please feel free to
contact us.

Empowerment

8th Graders Role Play Truman's War Cabinet |

The eighth graders traveled to the Truman Library's
White House Decision Center in Independence,
Missouri on January 12 to participate in a
simulation on ending the war with Japan in July,
1945. Each student took on the role of a different
member of Truman's cabinet, including Secretary of
War Henry Stimson, Secretary of State James Byrnes,
Army Chief of Staff George Marshall, and Truman
himself. Students prepared by studying World War II
before the break and analyzing the situation in 1945
and primary documents the week before.
At the Decision Center, they divided into small
groups according to their role and studied
declassified documents. Selected students then
delivered briefings to "members of Congress."
Students then regrouped into advisory teams and
debated the various options available in late July,
1945, including the newly tested atomic weapon.
"Truman," played by Dylan C., then
delivered his speech explaining his decision.
This simulation was the most in-depth of all the
experiential learning units that are an integral
part of 8th grade history, and provided students
with a close look at the challenges of leadership.

History Students Create Trojan Horse |
Mrs. Cross's 6th grade Ancient
World History students learned about the Trojan War from
the Spartans' perspective. The Trojan War was
mythically fought between the Trojans of Troy and the
Spartans of Greece. The war was fought over the
abduction of King Menelaus' wife, Helen, who was said to
be the most beautiful woman in the world. War was waged
for over 10 years before the Trojan Horse was built.
The Trojans thought that the Spartans had given up
rescuing Helen and returned to Sparta, but the soldiers
were really hiding inside a large wooden horse that the
Trojans wheeled inside their city (they thought it was a
gift or peace offering). When the Trojans celebrated
their victory and fell asleep, the Spartans sprung out
of the horse and conquered the Trojans. The beautiful
Helen was saved, and King Menelaus brought the Spartans
back home. |
