The Collegiate Connection
|
|
| |
|
From Our Head of
School |
|
Dear Friends,
Congratulations to the Topeka Collegiate Science
Olympiad team coached by Middle School Science
Teacher Loren Shinn. The 14-member team took
first place in regional competition on Wednesday
in Salina, blowing away the competition by 44
points. This is the fifth consecutive regional
championship for TCS.
The Science Olympiad team medaled in 14 of
23 events, bringing home six 1st place
medals, two 2nd place medals, and
six 3rd place medals. That's a lot
of science "bling"!
We're so proud of our middle school students
and of alumnus Daniel K
'07, who rejoined the team to
compete as a ninth grader. They all worked
hard and represented our school extremely
well.
Please see the article below for
individual results.
Warm Regards,

TCS Auction--"Celebrate! Auction 2008" |
 Thank
you to all families who have turned in
auction items! If you have not yet done so,
please do. The volunteers are working hard
to get items checked in and tagged.
Auction Day is just around the corner!
Please turn in your auction reservations by
the reservation deadline of January 22nd.
It is important for both planning and the
seating chart that we have as many as
possible by the 22nd. We make every attempt
to seat people together according to the
reservation request. Keep in mind, however,
that it is extremely difficult to accomodate
every request. This is an exciting and fun
event--we are looking forward to seeing
everyone there on February 2nd at 5:30 at
the Ramada Inn.

Nascar Nextel Cup Daytona 500 Tickets! |
|
TCS will be offering two Nascar Nextel Cup tickets
for sale by auction on eBay.
The auction is beginning on Sunday and ending the
following Sunday. The beginning bid will be the
face value of the tickets. This is a fund-raiser
for the school and we are hopeful that they will
bring much more than the face value, but it is an
excellent opportunity to do something fun and
benefit the school. "TCS" will be in the title of
the description, so you may search on TCS to find
the auction! Bid high, bid often! |

Living the Dream Prizewinning Essays |
Eighth
grader Kate H's (right) essay
Peace won first place in the annual "Living
the Dream" essay contest held each year to honor Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellow eighth grader
Shelby C won third place with her essay.
Kate's essay reads in part:
"Although there will never be peace
everywhere at every moment in every place, we
should still try our hardest. The more peace we
have on earth, the more love we share, the more
we give and the more understanding we have the
better a place the world will be. It is up to
you to change the world."

Parent Council--Technology Committee Forming! |
|
At the last Parent Council Meeting, it was suggested
that a technology committee be formed to evaluate
the state of technology at our school, research and
make recommendations on future needs, and help
determine the overall direction of technology for
both students and the facility. If you are
interested in serving on this committee, please
contact Tracey Goering at 249-4649 or
tracey_goering@yahoo.com.
It will require only a few hours throughout the
year. Knowledge of technology--computers, laptops,
websites, internet, etc. is helpful.

TCS Sports |
|
The basketball teams are currently in the middle of
their schedules! Before you know it, they will be
gearing up for the tournament from February 11-17!
The girls' 8th and 6th grade
teams have now combined into one team which will
play in the 8th grade league. They will
be playing the rest of the 8th grade
girls' schedule.
All of the teams are doing well with each one
showing improvement! I am looking for any one of
our teams to upset some favorites in the tournament.

Snow! Snow! Snow! |
|
Children love to play in the snow! Please send your
child to school with a coat, gloves, hat, snow boots
and a pair of snow pants so they may enjoy the snow.
Remember to wash dishes in the kitchen by the
assembly hall if you use them. Please do not leave
dirty dishes in the sink. Thank you. |

Pizza Party Winners for 25th Anniversary First
Semester Contest! |
The checkmarks have been counted and averaged by
number of students in the class. The winners
for the 25th Anniversary Spirit Chart first
semester contest are: Mrs. Hoyt's homeroom in
middle school and Mrs. Farley's class in lower
school. Both classes will be receiving a pizza
party celebration!!
Students have done a great job in participating
in TCS activities showing their spirit and
involvement with the school. A big thanks also
goes out to the teachers for keeping track of
all of the activities and participation by their
students.
Feel free to check the chart in your child's
classroom to see if it is up to date, especially
for younger students. Maybe your child has gone
to a TCS sporting event, volunteered for
community service outside the school, or
attended an event that your teacher is not aware
of. Let your teacher know so he or she can keep
the chart current.
At the end of the year we will again count the
checkmarks and give the winning class tickets
for a movie and popcorn. Then all students will
be in a drawing for the Grand Prize of a $100
Gift Certificate at the store of their choice.
