Collegiate Connection - Extra Features
Technical problems late last week prevented us from putting out the complete Collegiate Connection - something we're taking care of with this "extra edition". Here you'll find more photos and information about Disco Night, Pi Day, the Festival of the Nile and an update on the Hope and Inspiration Coffeehouse fundraiser organized by a TCS alumnus. Enjoy!

Disco Fever Hits TCS
The 25th Anniversary TCS Celebration Disco Dance was a huge success.  Approximately 200 parents, students, alumni, faculty and staff attended the dance on March 7. Volunteers turned the commons into a disco-themed fun zone where everyone could enjoy activities and refreshments. The gym was transformed into a disco complete with a DJ, disco ball and light show.

Four boxes of non perishable food items were collected at the door to support StuCo and their philanthropy - Project Topeka.

There was a best-disco-dressed contest.  First prize went to the Cole family (above). Jim, Michel', Jacob and Adam were all decked out in their finest disco wear.  Other winners were Blake Robbins, Claire Petty, Maya Beyer and Annalies Bozarth (below), all in their disco threads. There were many, many others dressed to disco the night away. Judging was difficult.

The Guess Who's Who from 1982 was another fun activity. Pictures of staff and faculty from 1982 were displayed and students tried to guess each person's identity.  First prize went to Sahil Rattan with 23 out of 24 correct.  There was a 5-way tie for second place with 22 out of 24 correct - Josie Pomeroy, Asher Gilliland, Jessica Jones, Caty Field, and Irene Nicolae.

There were many volunteers who helped to put this all together. We would like to thank:

We also thank:
  • All the student volunteers who helped with the activities and with set up
  • Junior League of Topeka for donating the use of their disco tent and many awesome prizes!
  • Mike Jannelle and Michael Mayfield for helping us with set up.
  • The parents who stayed after the dance and helped take down decorations and get everything back to normal without even being asked.

We apologize if we have inadvertently left anyone off the volunteer list. We appreciate that so many volunteered and helped out with the dance. It was so much fun to be a part of something that everyone in the school was invited to participate in and so many did!

Middle School students celebrate Pi
Day on March 14. Why? It's a math thing. 3.14 are the first three digits of pi.
March 14 just happens to also be Albert Einstein's birthday.

What better way to celebrate than with pie?!
Study of Ancient Egypt Celebrated at Nile Festival
 Auction Chairs

In preparation for middle school, fifth graders have been working on research and orgnizational skills in their study of ancient Egypt. Each student compiled an Egyptian exploration portfolio, which included several hands-on activities like preparing ancient Egyptian food, creating a three-dimensional model of an Egyptian tomb, and researching and creating a poster on an ancient Egyptian diety.

The culminating activity for both Mr. Philipp's and Mrs. Farley's fifth grade
classes' study of ancient Egypt was the Festival of the Nile, at which the students shared their knowledge - and a tasty buffet of Middle Eastern delicacies - with their parents, families and friends.

Alum "Brews" Second Annual Fundraiser
 Austin Gideon

Congratulations to Austin Gideon '04, for
organizing the second annual Hope and
Inspiration Coffeehouse - a showcase for high school talent in the arts and a benefit for
Easter Seals Capper Foundation.

Austin staged this year's coffeehouse, as last year's, in Topeka Collegiate's Assembly Hall.
The total raised at the event was $1,700, but because this young philanthropist had a matching gift offer, the total amount that he'll donate to Capper for scholarships is $3,400.

We're happy to be part of this fundraising partnership with an alum who is clearly carrying out the "humanitarian ideals" part of the TCS mission.
