From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents and Friends,
Dear Parents and Friends,
I would like to thank eighth grader Natalie
S. for running the school today!
Natalie was Head for a Day, and she did a
great job. She emceed this morning's
assembly, made important announcements and
decisions (like the one to eat our lunch
outside) and colored with pre-k students.
Natalie even played one inning on the
faculty team as we took on the eighth
graders in the annual Day of the Child
kickball game. Natalie also took obvious
pleasure in giving her dad orders!
Day of the Child is a wonderful celebration
of the joys of childhood, a day devoted to
games and treats and fun. Thank you to
organizers Carl Tillona and Jewelia Oswald,
and to all the teachers and parent
volunteers who made this a memorable day for
our students. Special thanks to the
Kingfisher family for providing the blow-up
slide that was such a huge hit with the
children.
Have a wonderful weekend.
With warm regards,

Dick Patterson
Acting Head of School

Anita Thiessen began
teaching at Shawnee Country Day School (now
Topeka Collegiate) 21 years ago. For all but

taught Kindergarten. The past three years, she
has used her special skills in the library and
the tutoring program.
Now it's time to say a
final farewell, as Mrs. Thiessen will retire
at the end of this year. She plans a move to
Oklahoma City to spend more time with her
four grandchildren in that city, and also
plans to travel to Minnesota to visit her
two grandchildren there.
Please join us for
a retirement reception for Mrs. Thiessen
Tuesday, May 12, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Author John Stokes to Speak at TCS -- Monday, May
18, 2:30 p.m. |
John
A. Stokes, author of the first-person narrative
Students on Strike: Jim Crow, Civil Rights, Brown,
and Me will be speaking
at Topeka Collegiate School on Monday, May
18 at 2:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
We would like to thank the Brown Foundation for
making this visit possible.
The following account of Students on Strike is
from Amazon.com :
"John Stokes has waited more than
50 years to give his eyewitness account of
'The Manhattan Project.' This was the name
he and a group of fellow students gave their
strike at R.R. Moton High School that helped
to end separate schooling for blacks and
whites, not only in his home state of
Virginia, but throughout America. Told in
Stokes' own words, the story vividly conveys
how his passion for learning helped set in
motion one of the most powerful movements in
American history, resulting in the
desegregation of schools - and life - in the
United States.
As a child tending crops on the family farm,
John Stokes never dreamed that one day he
would be at the center of the Civil Rights
Movement. Yet, on April 23, 1951, he and his
fellow students walked out of the school and
into the history books. Their school was
built to accommodate 180 students, yet over
400 black students attended classes in leaky
buildings with tar paper walls. A potbelly
stove served as the only source of heat, and
the school lacked running water, indoor
plumbing, and a cafeteria. Yet to Stokes and
his fellow students, it was their path to a
better life.
Students on Strike is an evocative
first-person narrative from a period of
radical change in American history. Stokes
recounts the planning of the student
walkout, the secret meetings, the plot to
send the principal on a wild goose chase
after "truant" students, and the strategy to
boycott classes until conditions improved.
The author recalls the challenges in
persuading teachers and parents to support
the strike, and the intimidation that came
in the form of threats and a cross-burning
on school grounds. Archival illustrations
from Stokes' scrapbook add to the emotional
impact of his story. The narrative follows
the course of the lawsuits filed by the
NAACP, which would became part of the
historic Brown v. Board of Education ruling
of the U.S. Supreme Court and the subsequent
end to segregation in America.
Young readers will relish this inspirational
account of the heroic struggles of John
Stokes and his fellow students; they will
also learn a timeless lesson that people
with little influence - but with great
determination - can make a difference."

Middle School Awards Ceremony -- Wednesday, May
20 |
|
This year's Middle School
Awards Ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 20 at
8:35 a.m. The major end-of-the-year awards will be
given at this assembly. It is a very special
ceremony that we hope you will plan to attend. |
|
Last Day of School is Wednesday, May 20; End of
Year Parties |
 The
last day of school for students in
pre-Kindergarten through 7th grade is
Wednesday, May 20, which is a half
day (noon dismissal). The last day of
school for students in 8th grade is Thursday,
May 21 with a morning graduation ceremony.
Attendance at the graduation ceremonies is
optional for students in grades 5 through 7.
Many homerooms will commemorate the end of
the school year with a class party. Your
child's homeroom teacher or volunteer room
parent will communicate with you the dates
and times of those parties.
We request that all off-campus
end-of-the-year parties do not affect
regular school hours of operation. TCS asks
that year-end parties held off of the Topeka
Collegiate campus take place after noon
dismissal on Wednesday. In keeping with the
school's philosophy of encouraging our
students to develop strategies of acceptance
and inclusion for all members of their
learning community please include all
members of your student's class when
planning end of the year off-campus
parties. Volunteer room parents should
always get final approval of the homeroom
teacher when helping or making arrangements
for classroom parties.
Update:
Child care WILL
be available for the afternoon of Wednesday,
May 20. Remember to
send a lunch with your child! Thank
you, Veronica Gutierrez!

|
8th Grade Graduation -- Thursday, May 21 |
Graduation ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. on

Earth Day Celebration and Contest -- Friday,
April 24 |
 Topeka
Collegiate School celebrated Earth Day on
Friday, April 24th this year. Students and
visitors had the opportunity to tour the
rain forest created by our 3rd graders,
brought waste-free lunches, voted on their
favorite recycled trash-to-treasure art
project, and enjoyed our evening event,
where they were able to create origami from
recycled paper, fashion a hummingbird feeder
out of a plastic bottle, decorate a fabric
tote bag, and more!
(left to right) Matt M. (2nd),
Malik B. (2nd),
Jessica J. (7th),
Edward B. (3rd), and
Drew
M. (3rd) use pine
cones, peanut butter, and bird seed
to create wild bird feeders.
On-air representatives
from the local ABC, NBC, and CBS
affiliates voted on our trash-to-treasure
projects. We were excited to be
featured during ABC Channel 49's 6:00 p.m.
live news broadcast from our rain forest
with meteorologist Alex Harrington. To view
Nell B. (3rd) speaking
about the rain forest's sloth on the
telecast, follow this link:
http://www.ktka.com/videos/2009/apr/24/24434/.
There were many
submissions in the Trash to Treasure
contest. Thank you to everyone who
scrounged through their recycling bins to
collect the parts needed to create figures,
robots, vehicles, and lots of other cool
projects. During our Friday evening event,
the creations were viewed and voted on
by Collegiate leadership team members and
Topeka media personalities.
Winners of the
People's Choice Awards for
their grade levels were Thomas B.
(pre-Kindergarten) (pictured at left); Rose
P. and Aditi M.
(1st grade); Edward B.,
Ryan R., and Jacob
S. (3rd grade); and Jordie
S. and Ben T. (5th
grade).

Ms. Bauer's 5th Grade Assembly -- May 1 |
|
Since the Guinness Book of World Records "dissed"
their submissions for potential records, Ms. Bauer's
5th graders decided they would create a record right
here in the school! How about digging up the south
playground and having the world's largest swimming
party? Or having the longest staring contest (in a
mirror, no less!)? What about setting the school
record for playing virtual table tennis?
You're all winners to us, 5th graders!

Family Pizza and Bingo Night Raises over $3,300
for Sea Camp |
|
We had a big crowd at the pizza and bingo family
night on May 1. Mrs. Berryman reports we sold
every slice of 56 large cheese pizzas!
Julia
G. (7th grade, left) was the
winner of the blackout game and took home the
grand prize, an iPod Touch. The biggest
winners, however, were our 7th graders: over
$3,300 was raised towards their trip to Sea Camp
in the Florida Keys next fall.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and to
the 7th grade parents and students for
organizing and overseeing the event.

5th Graders Visit Kansas City's Exchange City |
5th grade students in Ms.
Bauer's and Ms. Wilch's classes visited Exchange
City in Kansas City on April 21.
Exchange City is a miniature city made up of
fourteen thriving businesses that come to
life when young people take on the role of
business entrepreneurs and civic leaders who
work together to create a bustling
metropolis.
Prior to the event, students take career
placement tests, and apply for and interview
for jobs. At Exchange City, students learn
strategies to make effective decisions as
consumers, producers, savers, investors, and
citizens.

Rainforest Adventurer Visits Collegiate |
Dave
Freeman has spent the last seven years exploring the
world's rainforests. He brought the wonders of
exploration and the Amazon to our school on April 27
for a series of assemblies for second through eighth
grades.
Using videos, photos,
artifacts, and interactive activities, Dave
helped students understand how plants, animals,
and people live in the rainforest, and how our
lives are connected to and affected by the
rainforest.
Thank you to the Kokari
Foundation for sponsoring Dave Freeman.

Middle School Play |
The Brothers Grimm:
Out of Order
When brothers Jake and Will Grimm can't agree on
a script, they end up in a fight - pages are
swapped, plots intermingled. . . it's a complete
mess! With name-calling, finger pointing and
lots of "I quits," the entire show collapses
just as the principal arrives. But all is not
lost! The producer rallies the troops with an
incredible cheesy speech, and the cast dishes
out the works of the Brothers Grimm in six
minutes and 12 seconds. And although they don't
truly succeed, they actually find their own path
to happily ever after.
Our thanks to director Robin Murphy, and kudos
to all of the cast and crew for a wonderful
production!

Laura N.: Math Whiz Kid! |
We'd
like to share an email that fifth grader Laura N.
forwarded to her math teacher, Phyllis Hoyt last
month:
Dear Mrs. Hoyt,
Today I got a letter from KU saying I got an
honorable mention at the contest two weeks ago.
Also, I went to the three-hour, four-question
mathematics olympiad in Manhattan today. In the
category of fifth and sixth grade, I got first
place. I also got a prize called the grand
prize. It was awarded to the student with the
most points regardless of their grade category.
When the speaker announced the grand prize, he
said that I got all the questions exactly
correct and I didn't get counted off at all. I
have the questions and a copy of my answers,
since I finished with two hours left and I had
extra paper. They are exact duplicates of the
answers that I turned in except that they don't
have the heading on them.
My prizes for the first place and grand prize
were two books: for the first place, "Perplexing
Puzzles and Tantalizing Teasers" and for the
grand prize, "Hexaflexagons, Probability
Paradoxes, and the Tower of Hanoi." In the book
I got for the grand prize, I found the exact
problem on the 7-8 grade test.
Sincerely,
Laura

2nd Graders Host Feast of Nations |
On Friday, May 1, the second grade invited parents
and grandparents to our annual Feast of Nations.
We enjoyed delicious foods from around the world.
This is the culmination of our Other Cultures/Other
Lands language arts unit.
During April the students read non-fiction and
fiction stories from other countries, as well as
learning some facts about the geography and culture
of nations around the world. Each child chose a
country from Europe on which to complete a poster
report. We concentrated on Europe for these reports
to extend this year's school-wide theme.
