From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents and Friends,
"The kids literally squealed with delight
when they arrived to see the new monitors
today!" (May 14)
- Tracey
Goering, Computer Teacher
It is a great pleasure to let you know that our
school computer lab has been transformed! There
are 22 new, flat panel monitors that deliver
sharper, brighter pictures for our students.
They replace the big, bulky monitors that used
to take up so much room that it was impossible
for students to find space for books, notebooks
or other materials.
Less visible, but even more important, are the
new virtual desktops hosted by four powerful
Dell workstations that make computing
significantly faster - approximately 100 times
faster - than before. This is a big deal!
Students now get a much more rapid response from
the lab computers, allowing them to work
efficiently, without frustration.
Assistant Head of School and Technology
Committee Chairman Carl Tillona says, "This new
technology will deepened students' interest and
engagement in academic learning." First grader
Ethan A. seems pretty pleased
with the new setup!
One more thing to celebrate: The computer lab is
now "greener" than before. The new LCDs and
computers will put out less heat and use about
1/3 the electricity of the old equipment. Not
only is our carbon footprint smaller, but we
will save around $1,000 on electricity for the
22 workstations over the next five years.
There are many people to thank. Proceeds from
Spirit Wear sales, Poker Night and the Pancake
Breakfast funded roughly two-thirds of the
computer lab improvements. So if you bought a
sweatshirt, ate pancakes or played poker, pat
yourself on the back! We thank the Parent
Council and dynamic Spirit Wear co-chairs Debbie
Gibson and Leslie Ham for their enthusiastic
fundraising to purchase flat screen monitors.
A generous gift made by Dennis Mahan and Tracey
Goering to the capital campaign - Building
Futures One Child at a Time - and designated for
technology, financed the rest of the
improvements. Computer Teacher Tracey Goering
describes the first moments of excitement, "I
wish everyone could have been there to witness
my 2nd and 3rd grade classes arrive this
afternoon. It was worth the effort to experience
the joy of such a small investment."
We also thank the Technology Committee, chaired
by Carl Tillona, for fast-tracking the project
in time for students in summer computer camps to
enjoy the benefits, and Technology Director
David Zlotky for technical help and advice.
When students return in the fall, the quality of
their technology education will be greatly
enhanced by the improvements in the computer
lab. The Technology Committee plans to meet
through the summer as its researches the next
phase of technology improvements.
If you're here for Summer Adventures or just in
the neighborhood this summer, feel free to drop
in and check out the new computer lab!
With warm regards,

Dick Patterson

Summer Adventures 2009 Catalog is Now Online! |
|
 Whether
you have preschoolers who love to "do" things,
children who thrive on academic challenges, or
middle schoolers who want to get a jump on History
Day, you will find an activity to their liking at
Topeka Collegiate Summer Adventures. All children
are welcome regardless of the school they attend.
Children can spend the entire summer, a few weeks,
or just part of the day at Topeka Collegiate.
Our very flexible Summer Day Camp is
available for children entering Kindergarten
through 6th grade. For a flat charge of
$4.00 per hour, children may stay an hour, a
day, or all summer through mid-August.
Summer Day Camp also provides before-care
and after-care for campers enrolled in other
Summer Adventures sessions. Day Camp began
May 26th; Summer Adventures begin June 1.
You may view this year's classes by going to the TCS
web site and clicking on "Summer Programs" or by
clicking here.
Please print out, complete, and return the two
registration forms ("Camp Registration" and "Summer
Adventures Registration Form") for each child and
return it to school with your deposit. Enroll now;
camps are filling up quickly!

Goodbye, Mrs. Thiessen! |
|
We bid farewell to Anita
Thiessen as she retires after 21 years of teaching
and tutoring at Topeka Collegiate School.
At the conclusion
of our May 12 assembly, students
surprised Mrs. Thiessen with a
presentation in her honor. 4th graders
Justin A. and
Lillian W. dedicated their duet
"Somewhere Out There" to their former
Kindergarten teacher, and signed the
lyrics in honor of Mrs. Thiessen's
hearing-impaired
son. Students presented Mrs. Thiessen
with roses and a garden bench with an
engraved plaque, and the entire school
sang "The Parting Song" (a.k.a. the Love
and Happiness song) in a round.
After school the same day, a
reception for Mrs. Thiessen was held
in the TCS library. Family members,
current and former students and
colleagues were on hand to say
goodbye and wish her well in her
retirement and her move to Oklahoma
City.
Mrs. Thiessen,
thank you for your dedication to
Topeka Collegiate, and best wishes
for your retirement. We'll miss
you!
4th graders Lillian
W. and Justin A. sign "I
love you" to their former Kindergarten teacher.
Mrs. Thiessen's past
pupils lead the school in singing "The Parting
Song."
Katrina
Ramirez '04 and Mrs. Thiessen's
4-year-old granddaughter Adeline Rose help
celebrate.

Field Days
|
Despite looming thunderstorms, Lower School
students enjoyed taking part
in Field Day activities May 12.
Thank you to parent volunteers who helped Mr. Ginapp
on both Lower School and Middle School field days.
The kids (and grown-ups!) had a great time!

Author John Stokes Speaks on Segregation and Civil
Rights |
John
A. Stokes, author of the first-person narrative
Students on Strike: Jim Crow, Civil Rights, Brown,
and Me visited
Topeka Collegiate School on May 18 to recount his
experiences as a student in the civil rights
movement of the 1950s.
(Below) Mr. Stokes assigns a colored
card to each rider on the "bus" indicating his
or her "race" and subsequent place on the bus.
We would like to thank Mr. Stokes for visiting
our school and the Brown Foundation for making
the visit possible.

Mrs. Hoyt's 6th Grade Class Assembly |
|
Mrs.
Hoyt's 6th grade class (directed by John MacDonald)
showcased their many talents during their production
of "Topeka Collegiate Idol" at their May 8th
assembly.
We were treated to performances by Jimmy Shimmy,
Miley Cyrus and Shakira, but the hands-down
winner and new Topeka Collegiate Idol by
unanimous decision was our own Phyllis Hoyt and
her rendition of "Chicken Noodle Soup" (wit a
soda on da side). Way to go, Mrs. Hoyt!

4th Grader Contributes Birthday Proceeds to TCS
Capital Campaign |
Chase
H. celebrated his 10th birthday with an
at-school party organized and supervised by teachers
Dallas Bauer and Marilyn Kido. The party was
purchased by his parents at our school auction in
February. In lieu of gifts, Chase generously asked
party-goers to make a donation to the
school's capital campaign.
Thank you for your selflessness and generosity,
Chase!

Middle Schoolers Nominated for Community Service
Award |

At Let's Help, middle schoolers assemble
cook books, September 2009 (left) and distribute
holiday gifts, December, 2009 (right).
Karen Taylor of Let's Help has nominated the Topeka
Collegiate Middle School for the "By the People For
the People" volunteer award for their community
service to Let's Help.
Karen writes:
"It was refreshing to have
young minds volunteer. They were continually
coming up with new ways to make the process
faster, easier, and more efficient...We all
believed this would be a 'win-win' situation and
our beliefs were confirmed. The students have
shared their Let's Help experiences with others
at school, at home with their parents and
siblings, their neighbors, and many others. When
the volunteers are our young citizens we know we
have opened a new door for them to participate
in helping those less fortunate."
The winners will be
announced at an awards luncheon on June 16 at
Washburn University.

Day of the Child |
Our school celebrated the Day of the Child on May
8. Our students were treated to a picnic-style
lunch with their book buddies, then watched their
schoolmates create the traditional maypole (left). The
party lasted all afternoon, with fun activity
stations, and culminated in our annual 8th grade
versus faculty kickball game. (We hear there was
some controversy regarding the scoring this year!)
Thank you for organizing this fun event, Mrs. Oswald.
And special thanks to the Kansas Grain Inspection
Service for their contribution to Day of the Child. |

If I Could Pick the Menu, I'd Choose. . . |
|
When kitchen volunteer Carl
Maichel suggested to our auction team that perhaps
students would like to choose the lunch
menu for a week, we knew we had a terrific auction
item on our hands, and parents proved us right!
Three families bid on the opportunity to pick what
we would eat for a week, and we think the kids (and
parents!) made some great choices. We hope you had
fun!
Thank you to the Cole and Cox
families and to the Carrington family, who will
present their menu choices next school year.

cups, lovely tea sandwiches, fancy treats, and
desserts.
Thank you, parents and
reception volunteers, for your help in continuing
this wonderful Topeka Collegiate tradition.

American Mathematics Competitions -- Statewide
Results |
|
At the Friends of Mathematics Awards Banquet held at
Kansas State University on April 7, four Collegiate
students were recognized for their excellence on the
state of Kansas American Mathematics Contests.
For each of the AMC 8, AMC 10, and AMC 12 contests,
students are presented with a 25-question
multiple-choice test. They are scored for the number of
problems they solve correctly with in a specified period
of time.
On the AMC 8, Josh G. tied for 3rd
place overall and the third highest 7th grader in
the state; Cain M. tied for the
second highest 8th grader; Laura N.
was the highest 5th grader; and Jordie S. was
the second highest 5th grader.
Topeka Collegiate is one of two AMC 8 participating
schools in Kansas who have qualified for the AMC 8
Honor Roll. This roll is achieved by attaining a
score of 66 through 75 when adding together the the
top three student scores (within a school).
On the AMC 10, Josh G. was the
second place 7th grader in the state, and
Laura N. was the second place 5th grader.
On the AMC 12, Josh G. was the top
7th grader in the state.
Congratulations to all of our competitors and keep
up the good work!

Competitions, visit the web site of the Mathematical

Ms. Wilch's 5th Grade Assembly |
Ms. Wilch's 5th graders went
"green" with their assembly, reusing props,
costumes, and scenery previously used in other
productions (where have we seen that rubber ducky
before?). Methinks Shakespeare was a big influence
in this production; the Bard would have been proud
of their Romeos and Juliets. Bravo, thespians!

Matt M. Makes Donation to Locks of Love |
In order to donate his blonde
hair to Locks of Love, 6th grader Matt M.
grew his hair out for two years to
get it to the required 10" length.
Locks of Love is an organization that provides
hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children
in the United States and Canada suffering from
long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
For more information on Locks of Love, visit
their web site at

Way to go, Matt; you're a terrific example to
all of us.

Middle School Textbook Exchange -- Buy One, Sell One,
Trade One |
To all 5th through 8th grade
parents:
As a past TCS parent, I know that it is easier to keep a
copy of some textbooks at home rather than have your
child lug his books home each night. We would like to
help you out in that regard.
Do you have "at home" copies of textbooks that you'd
like to sell ? Do you need to purchase "at home"
textbooks for the coming year? We'd like to get the
buyers and the sellers together. To start us off:
Linda Fricke has a copy of Transition Math volume one
and a copy of Transition Math volume two that she will
sell. You may phone Linda at 273-1295 or email me,
Karen Benson, at kbenson@topekacollegiate.org and we
will get this started.
I look forward to hearing from many, many middle school
parents over the summer with orders to buy or sell.

Thank you, Volunteers! |
Since we lost our nighttime custodial crew in
January, Mike Jannelle and Michael Mayfield have
found it difficult to keep up with the numerous
maintenance tasks that need to be completed
around the school.
Four school families have answered the call for
grounds help: Randy B. (Nick,
7th), James B. (Reese, pre-k),
Ben C. (Thomas, 7th), and Jim
C. (Jacob, 5th and Adam,
4th) have worked out a schedule among themselves
to keep the lawns and fields on our campus mowed
and trimmed so that we don't have to pay a
contractor to keep our grounds tidy.
When you see one of these men volunteering their
time to help out our school and our maintenance
staff, be sure to thank them!
