The Collegiate Connection

From Our Head of School
Dear Parents and Friends, Mr. Hudspeth

The school year is off to a great start!  Back to School Night offered an opportunity for parents to visit their students' classrooms to get an overview of the year ahead.  We were also treated to a surprise live video conference with Pat Garrett, past parent and former board president, who spoke eloquently about the special place TCS holds in his heart even though his two girls are now grown, and the Garrett family left Topeka for Tulsa nearly 15 years ago.  Pat has made a commitment of a quarter of a million dollars to the Topeka Collegiate Building Futures One Child at a Time capital campaign to build a permanent middle school and upgrade technology.

The Parent Council is doing a great job with a variety of events designed to help build community.  Please plan to join us for the All-School Social on Thursday, September 25, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at 3129 SW Huntoon. This is an adults-only event.  There is no school the following day.  It is an opportunity to renew existing friendships and make new ones.  Fellow parents often become lifelong friends.

Hats off to Debbie Gibson and Leslie Ham for their high-energy spiritwear leadership.  TCS spiritwear is a great way to support our school and your child while showing your school spirit.  Watch for exciting new styles as we head into fall.

Please mark your calendars for Family Fun Night on Wednesday, October 1. Come enjoy a delicious chili supper that will help send our eighth graders to Seacamp, then let your student be your tour guide as you visit his/her classroom.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Warm Regards,

Parent Council Meeting -- October 2
All parents, caregivers, and friends are encouraged to attend the first of four Parent Council meetings scheduled for this school year. The Parent Council meeting will run from 6:00 to 7:00 in the Assembly Hall.

What is the Parent Council?
If you are a parent at TCS, you're a member of the Parent Council! Our school is relying on interested volunteers to make it a success. It is important that everyone participate in the council, whether by attending meetings, being on a committee or running for office. The larger the council, the more representative of the school family it will be. NEW FAMILIES are welcome and encouraged to participate. This is an excellent way to get to know other families and participate in important school events.

Officers and Committee Chairs
Parent Council officers for the 2008-2009 school year are Greg Schneider (President), Kim Baker (Vice President), Elena Carrington (Treasurer), and Tracey Goering (Secretary).

If you wish to volunteer for any of these committees, please contact the Committee Chairperson.

There are six committees in the Parent Council representing the following areas:
Special Events (Debra Copley and Joe Anderson, Chairs)
The Special Events Committee plans and executes school events such as the Thanksgiving Day Feast and Grandparents Day. They are responsible for finding volunteers to support the events, and offering assistance to the volunteers to make sure that the events are successful.
School Support (Chair position open)
The School Support Committee volunteers to support the school in a variety of ways. They offer office assistance, lunchroom assistance, and support teachers in the classroom
Communication (Jill Cox, Chair)
The Communication Committee's responsibility is to communicate news from the Parent Council meetings to the school community. The chair of this committee writes articles for the newsletter, announces the meetings, and ensures that all active members of the council are aware of current council business.
Fund Raising (Debbie Gibson, Chair)
The Fund Raising Committee manages a variety of money-making projects to earn money for the school. They are responsible for Box-Tops for Education, toner cartridge recycling, recycling cell-phones, collecting Campbell Soup labels and the School Spiritwear program.
The funds raised by this committee are tracked by the Treasurer of the Parent Council who communicates with school leadership about the availability of funds.
Marketing (Ben Coates, Chair)
The Marketing Committee's responsibility is to seek opportunities for school leadership and the Head of School to meet with community and/or business leaders to educate them about our school, its goals, and ways that TCS can partner with the community to make it stronger.
Multicultural Education Committee (Dallas Bauer, Chair)
The Multicultural Education Committee (MEC) is active in ensuring that the school has a variety of educational activities to promote the school's diversity mission and the school's annual cultural theme.

Open Forum and Parent Council meetings take place on an alternating schedule, usually on the first Thursday of the month:
Open Forum meetings: November 13, January 8, March 5, May 7
Parent Council meetings: October 2, December 4, February 5, April 2

For more information on how you can get involved, click on the Parent Council tab on the TCS website.
Monthly Parents' Coffee
Topeka Collegiate School Parent Council officers would like to invite you to a morning coffee to be held the second week of every month. Tuesday October 7 will be coffee days for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st grade. On Wednesday October 8 we will host parents in 2nd through 5th grades.  Thursday October 9 will be reserved for middle school parents.

Please plan to drop in to the Assembly Hall between 8:15 and 9:15.  We'll supply the coffee and pastries; you supply the conversation!
Lunchroom News-- Dietician's Visit; Volunteers Wanted and Appreciated!
Mr. H. Serves Lunch
Topeka Collegiate School's kitchen staff has instituted some changes as recommended by a St. Francis Hospital dietician. He recently visited our school and overall agreed that our lunch program was a good one. The changes which have been introduced include serving turkey hot dogs, the canned fruit is packed in water rather than heavy syrup, and ten serving bays allow for more food choices every day.

Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their child; just join him or her in the lunch service line, and we'll simply add your lunch to their account. No reservations are necessary!

Volunteers are urgently needed to help serve lunch and to check out the students on the school's computerized lunch accounting system. Head of School David Hudspeth even pitched in last week when the kitchen staff found itself short-handed (above, right).

If you are able to help, please let us know as soon as possible by calling the school, or by filling out and returning your volunteer sign-up form. You may access it by clicking on the Parent Council tab on the school website or by clicking here.

Thank you for volunteering; we appreciate you!
Students Demonstrate Philanthropy on their Birthdays
For the past five years, seventh graders Nick B., Alec B., and Brandon F. have combined their August birthdays into one party and invited all the boys in their grade level. In lieu of gifts, the boys have requested that their guests make a donation to a designated good cause; past projects included books for the library, contributions for new school playground equipment, and donations for the Stone Nature Center.

This year the three boys chose Topeka's Helping Hands Humane Society as their worthy cause. They were able to present the animal shelter with $260 in cash, as well as toys and food dishes for the pets awaiting adoption. There will be a brick with all of their names on it for the new shelter building commemorating their generosity.

Inspired by Zi Yan D.'s generosity in donating her July birthday monies to Topeka Collegiate's Building Futures One Child at a Time capital campaign for the construction of a permanent middle school (see the August 19th Collegiate Connection issue), fourth grader Joe M. decided to follow her lead. At his rock band-themed tenth birthday party in August at TCS, Joe set out an envelope for donations and collected $150 for the TCS middle school building fund.

Thank you, Joe; you rock!

2008 Buddy Walk -- Join Madison's Team
 Madison's Team
Topeka Collegiate School and Facilities Manager Mike Jannelle invite you to join "Madison's Team" at the 2008 Kansas City Buddy Walk at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday morning, October 18, 2008.

Mr. Jannelle and his team - including several TCS staff and faculty - are participating in the one-mile Buddy Walk to raise awareness and money for individuals with Down Syndrome, including Mike's six-year-old granddaughter, Madison (left).

The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October, and to raise money for local and national education, research, and advocacy programs, and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome.

The Buddy Walk is a one-mile walk in which anyone can participate without special training. It is also a family festival and a day of fun, food, and activities for all.

If you would like to walk with Madison's Team, please see Mr. Jannelle.  For more information on the Buddy Walk, or if you are unable to participate but would like to make a donation to the team, click hereUse Madison's Team as your search criteria for Team Name.
2009 TCS Auction Chairs Named
TCS parents, Joe Anderson and Petra Schneider, have generously agreed to be the co-chairs of this year's auction, to be held Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Ramada Inn downtown.

Joe is the father of Kindergartener Aubree A. Petra's two children are fifth grader Bailey and third grader Balin.

The auction wouldn't be possible without the tremendous efforts of volunteers like Joe and Petra. To find out how you can be part of the fun, click here to read committee descriptions and to print out a sign-up form, or get in touch with one of the co-chairs. Thank you!
Your Child's Original Art
Your child is busy creating an original work of art which will be professionally reproduced onto a 4" X 5" magnet. The magnet will be sent home in home folders next month. You may return it without obligation, or you may purchase the magnet and/or order a variety of other products featuring your child's signed work of art.

This Original Art program is a fundraiser for the  8th grade Sea Camp trip.
Earn Money for TCS Through Everyday Activities!
You can earn money for Topeka Collegiate through everyday activities like going to the grocery store, searching and shopping online, and recycling useful products.  Click on the links for more information on participating brands and special promotions.

www.goodsearch.com -- Each time you use GoodSearch, a Yahoo!-powered search engine, for your online searches, Topeka Collegiate receives a cash donation.  Be sure to designate Topeka Collegiate as your designated cause.  Since its inception, your searches have earned us $136!

Box Tops for Education -- For each Box Tops 4 Education coupon you clip and turn in to the office, TCS receives 10 cents.  The Box Tops logo can be found on hundreds of participating brands from diapers to frozen vegetables to disposable bags.  And if you shop online at the Box Tops marketplace, a portion of every qualifying purchase (up to 22%) is donated to our school at no extra cost to you.  Participating online stores include GapKids, Pottery Barn, Hotels.com, and Lands' End.

Best Choice Labels  -- New this school year.  When you purchase Best Choice brand products, clip out and return the UPC portion (the proof of purchase) to the office.  For each bundle of 1,000 UPCs, our school will earn $30.  Topeka-area stores that carry Best Choice products are Apple Market, Tilton's Westside, Price Chopper, Perry Lecompton and Oskaloosa Thriftways, and Checkers.

Campbell's Labels for Education -- You no longer need to save the entire label - just the UPC code is needed for redemption.  Other brand names besides Campbell's in this program include Pepperidge Farm, Prego, Swanson, V8, Market Day, Franco-American, and SpaghettiO's.

Nestlé Pure Life Water Labels -- As part of Nestlé's Go Play! program, TCS can redeem any size or flavor Nestlé water bottle labels for sports gear or towards transportation costs for school field trips.

Tyson Project A+ Labels -- Tyson chicken product labels are worth 24˘ to Topeka Collegiate.

Office Depot 5% Back to Schools Program -- 5% of your purchase comes directly to the school in the form of free supplies.  School supplies qualify for the program, while computers, technology items, and other items do not.  Simply identify TCS as your school choice at the checkout and/or supply the school ID number: 70039209.  Past purchases can be credited to the school as long as they were made within the last quarter.

Target Take Charge of Education Program -- Apply and get approved for a Target REDCard.  When you enroll, designate TCS as your school of choice and Target will send our school a no-strings-attached check worth up to 1% of your REDCard purchases at Target and Target.Com.  Last year your purchases earned Topeka Collegiate $538.49!

Recycle your old cell phones, printer and toner cartridges, plastic containers marked with a 1 or 2 within a triangle, paper, corrugated cardboard, and newspapers -- all of these items are collected and redeemed for cash.  Please place old cell phones and printer cartridges in the collection boxes across from the main office in the teachers' workroom.  Plastic, cardboard, paper, and newspaper may be placed in the marked Dumpsters on the east side of the campus.  Last year your recycled materials earned the school $105.07!

We'd like to thank Debbie Rosacker for her past coordination of the label redemption program, and say welcome and thank you to parent Elena Carrington for taking over these important fundraisers!
