The Collegiate Connection
|
|
| |
|
From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents and Friends,
The school year is off to a great start! Back
to School Night offered an opportunity for
parents to visit their students' classrooms to
get an overview of the year ahead. We were
also treated to a surprise live video conference
with Pat Garrett, past parent and former board
president, who spoke eloquently about the
special place TCS holds in his heart even
though his two girls are now grown, and the
Garrett family left Topeka for Tulsa nearly 15
years ago. Pat has made a commitment of a
quarter of a million dollars to the Topeka
Collegiate Building Futures One Child at a
Time capital campaign to build a permanent
middle school and upgrade technology.
The Parent Council is doing a great job with a
variety of events designed to help build
community. Please plan to join us for the
All-School Social on Thursday, September
25, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at 3129 SW Huntoon.
This is an adults-only event. There is
no school the following day. It is an
opportunity to renew existing friendships
and make new ones. Fellow parents often become
lifelong friends.
Hats off to Debbie Gibson and Leslie Ham for
their high-energy spiritwear leadership. TCS
spiritwear is a great way to support our school
and your child while showing your school
spirit. Watch for exciting new styles as we
head into fall.
Please mark your calendars for Family
Fun Night on Wednesday, October
1. Come enjoy a delicious chili supper
that will help send our eighth graders to
Seacamp, then let your student be your tour
guide as you visit his/her classroom.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Warm Regards,
David K. Hudspeth, Jr.
Head of School

Parent Council Meeting -- October 2 |
|
All parents, caregivers, and
friends are encouraged to attend the first of
four Parent Council meetings scheduled for this
school year. The Parent Council meeting will run
from 6:00 to 7:00 in the Assembly Hall.
What is the Parent Council?
If you are a parent at TCS, you're a
member of the Parent Council! Our school is
relying on interested volunteers to make it a
success. It is important that everyone
participate in the council, whether by attending
meetings, being on a committee or running for
office. The larger the council, the more
representative of the school family it will be.
NEW FAMILIES are welcome and encouraged to
participate. This is an excellent way to get to
know other families and participate in important
school events.
Officers and Committee Chairs
Parent Council officers for the 2008-2009 school
year are Greg Schneider (President), Kim Baker
(Vice President), Elena Carrington (Treasurer),
and Tracey Goering (Secretary).
If you wish to volunteer for any of
these committees, please contact the Committee
Chairperson.
There are six committees in the Parent Council
representing the following areas:
Special Events (Debra Copley
and Joe Anderson, Chairs)
The Special Events Committee plans and executes
school events such as the Thanksgiving Day Feast
and Grandparents Day. They are responsible for
finding volunteers to support the events, and
offering assistance to the volunteers to make
sure that the events are successful.
School Support (Chair position
open)
The School Support Committee volunteers to
support the school in a variety of ways. They
offer office assistance, lunchroom assistance,
and support teachers in the classroom
Communication (Jill Cox, Chair)
The Communication Committee's responsibility
is to communicate news from the Parent Council
meetings to the school community. The chair of
this committee writes articles for the
newsletter, announces the meetings, and ensures
that all active members of the council are aware
of current council business.
Fund Raising (Debbie Gibson,
Chair)
The Fund Raising Committee manages a variety of
money-making projects to earn money for the
school. They are responsible for Box-Tops for
Education, toner cartridge recycling, recycling
cell-phones, collecting Campbell Soup labels and
the School Spiritwear program.
The funds raised by this committee are tracked
by the Treasurer of the Parent Council who
communicates with school leadership about the
availability of funds.
Marketing (Ben Coates, Chair)
The Marketing Committee's responsibility is to
seek opportunities for school leadership and the
Head of School to meet with community and/or
business leaders to educate them about our
school, its goals, and ways that TCS can partner
with the community to make it stronger.
Multicultural Education Committee
(Dallas Bauer, Chair)
The Multicultural Education Committee (MEC) is
active in ensuring that the school has a variety
of educational activities to promote the
school's diversity mission and the school's
annual cultural theme.
Open Forum and Parent Council meetings take
place on an alternating schedule, usually on the
first Thursday of the month:
Open Forum meetings: November
13, January 8, March 5, May 7
Parent Council meetings:
October 2, December 4, February 5, April 2

Lunchroom News-- Dietician's Visit; Volunteers
Wanted and Appreciated! |
|
Topeka Collegiate School's kitchen staff has
instituted some changes as recommended by a St.
Francis Hospital dietician. He recently visited
our school and overall agreed that our lunch
program was a good one. The changes which have
been introduced include serving turkey hot dogs,
the canned fruit is packed in water rather than
heavy syrup, and ten serving bays allow for more
food choices every day.
Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their
child; just join him or her in the lunch service
line, and we'll simply add your lunch to their
account. No reservations are necessary!
Volunteers are urgently needed to
help serve lunch and to check out the students
on the school's computerized lunch accounting
system. Head of School David
Hudspeth even pitched in last week when the
kitchen staff found itself short-handed
(above, right).
If you are able to help, please let us know as
soon as possible by calling the school, or by
filling out and returning your volunteer sign-up
form. You may access it by clicking on the
Parent Council tab on the school website or by
clicking
here.
Thank you for volunteering; we appreciate you!

Students Demonstrate Philanthropy on their
Birthdays |
|
For the past five years, seventh graders
Nick B., Alec B., and
Brandon F. have combined their
August birthdays into one party and invited all the
boys in their grade level. In lieu of gifts, the
boys have requested that their guests make a
donation to a designated good cause; past projects
included books for the library, contributions
for new school playground equipment, and donations
for the Stone Nature Center.
This year the three boys chose Topeka's Helping
Hands Humane Society as their worthy cause. They
were able to present the animal shelter with $260 in
cash, as well as toys and food dishes for the pets
awaiting adoption. There will be a brick with all of
their names on it for the new shelter building
commemorating their generosity.
Inspired by Zi Yan D.'s
generosity in donating her July birthday monies
to Topeka Collegiate's Building Futures One
Child at a Time capital campaign for the
construction of a permanent middle school (see
the August 19th Collegiate Connection issue),
fourth grader Joe M. decided to
follow her lead. At his rock band-themed tenth
birthday party in August at TCS, Joe set out an
envelope for donations and collected $150 for
the TCS middle school building fund.
Thank you, Joe; you rock!

Joe M. and guests rock out at
Nick B. and Alec B. present
his August TCS birthday
party. a check and donated
supplies to Bill Acree,
Director of Development for the Humane
Society.

your designated cause. Since its inception,
your searches have earned us $136!

office, TCS receives 10 cents. The Box Tops logo
can be found on hundreds of participating brands
from diapers to frozen vegetables to disposable

Prego, Swanson, V8, Market Day, Franco-American, and
SpaghettiO's.

qualify for the program, while computers,
technology items, and other items do not.

70039209. Past purchases can be credited to the
school as long as they were made within the last

cardboard, and newspapers --
all of these items are collected and redeemed for
