The Collegiate Connection

Our Mission Statement
We prepare students for advanced education, successful
careers and responsible citizenship through a commitment
to academic excellence and humanitarian ideals. |
|
| |
| |
|
From Our Head of School
|
Dear Parents, Teachers, Family and Friends,
I am writing this letter to the parents,
teachers and all others who are invested in the
education of the students at Topeka Collegiate.
We are entering the second month of the school
year. We have had a great start and have created
a positive learning climate for our students to
develop positive learning skills.
Our parents are spending more time inside the
school and supporting the community that
supports our mission to prepare students for
advanced education, successful careers and
responsible citizenship through a commitment to
academic excellence and humanitarian ideals.
This is a time that we must continue all the
things that we did the first month of
school. October is very important, because it is
the month that we all must show our commitment
to continue to build the community of Topeka
Collegiate that supports our partnership in the
growth of our students. The challenge grows with
more homework, grading, and social
development.
All of our staff have set a goal to impact our
students during non-instruction time with our
students. Parents are coming into the school and
reinforcing the importance of their support of
our students' education
I always call this time important moments in a
child's life. Let's all continue the effort that
has made with this great start and set the pace
for the rest of the school year. The children
will meet our expectations. Let's all remember
that catching students in "precious moments"
creates a positive attitude. Helping them to
learn from a mistake is time to remind them of
our expectations.
 Before
I close, I want to thank TCS
grandparents René and Greg Armbruster for
arranging for the hot air balloon
demonstration on September 15.
The children loved it and I enjoyed my
ride!
As always, our teachers used the
demonstration to reinforce and enrich their
curricula.
The hot air balloon came during
kindergartners' transportation week. After
watching the balloon being inflated and
seeing their teachers take brief rides,
first graders wrote and illustrated their
impressions of the experience, and reviewed
the short "o" sound (hot).
Thanks, too, to the M. family for hosting
the All-Parent Social at their beautiful
home Friday. We appreciate their
hospitality.
Your partner in the
development of your child,

Dick Patterson
Head of School

Technology Improvements Approved by Trustees |
|
Teachers have no shortage of ideas
about educational possibilities for their students
following Board of Trustees approval of $55,000 in
Building Futures One Child at a Time
capital campaign funds for technology. The funds will be
used for faculty laptop, tablet and desktop computers,
and for 21 LCD projectors, which will be in teachers'
hands within the next couple of months.
Board President John Dietrick says board members are
pleased to replace aging computers that have become
a source of frustration. "Teachers are thankful that
they'll be able to perform computer tasks faster and
more reliably," he says, "but what's really exciting
is to see them energized as they think about what
they'll be able to do to improve the classroom
experience for their students."
Here is a small sample of
those ideas:
"I will be able to reference video clips
of political speeches, and download the original
texts of primary sources such as pictures,
governing documents, even art, as well as
involve students in voting in online polls and
creating class polls, continually instilling the
ideas of citizenship and civic
responsibilities."
- Patti Cross
Middle School Social Studies
"A teacher friend of mind starts each
day with the weather forecast, videos relating
to what she's teaching, daily math and language
questions, etc. from the Internet. I would love
to be able to do this."
- Jewelia
Oswald
Fourth Grade
"For History Day research: access and
navigate the public library's databases to show
students how to go beyond basic web searches to
find reliable and in-depth information. For
language arts: introduce sound as an element of
poetry by showing a short video clip of a famous
poet reading one of her poems."
- Lanny Moyer
Middle
School Language Arts &
Study
Skills
"I would be able to use the Shodor
website which has an amazing collection of
resources to support both math and science
education."
- Dr. Donna LaLonde
Sixth
Grade Science
These technology upgrades represent Phase II of a
comprehensive plan developed by the Technology
Committee chaired by Assistant Head of School Carl
Tillona. Phase I, completed this summer, involved
upgrades in the computer lab, including flat screen
monitors and greatly increased computing speed.

Alum Elected to Board of Trustees |
Keith
Leismann '91 is
the newest member of the Topeka Collegiate Board of
Trustees, voted in during the board's Annual Meeting on
September 16. Leismann is the third alum to be selected
as a trustee and the second on the current board. He and
fellow trustee Alison Langham '86 have
something else in common - both are second generation
Topeka Collegiate trustees whose fathers served on the
board.
Leismann is proud to be a member of the Class of
1991, the first class to go all the way from pre-k
through eighth grade at TCS. "I'm looking forward to
giving back to a place that's had such a great
impact on my life," he says.
Liesmann is General Sales
Manager at Cumulus Broadcasting in Topeka. He and
his wife Monique are new parents.

Cast Your Vote for This Year's Student-designed
T-shirt! |
Students in 5th through 8th grade have turned in
some terrific designs for this year's school
t-shirt contest! The posters are numbered
and displayed on the wall between room 111 and
the health room.
Students have already voted on their favorite
designs, and now it's your turn! Parents and
other family members are invited to stop by the
office and pick up a ballot (one per person,
please). In the space marked "student name"
just fill in "parent", choose your favorites,
and drop it in the marked box by the posters.
Ballots must be submitted by 5:45 p.m.
on Tuesday, September 28th.
The winning design will be announced at the
Halloween assembly on Friday, October 30th. The
designer will receive a hooded sweatshirt and a
t-shirt featuring their very own design!
Thanks to all who entered
this fun contest!

Annual Fund Takes Flight |
Supporting Our School
Many of the qualities
that make Topeka Collegiate an exceptional place of
learning are the direct result of annual support
each year from parents, trustees, faculty/staff,
grandparents, alumni, alumni parents and friends of
the school.
Tuition and fees alone do
not cover the cost of a Topeka Collegiate
education. The school relies on voluntary
financial support to bridge the gap, which
amounts to approximately $1,500 per student.
Faculty and Staff Lead the Way
October is Annual Fund Month, but
faculty and staff were solicited in August,
at the very beginning of the school year. We
are proud and happy to report that our
faculty and staff are 100% on board! That
means every teacher and staff member,
whether full- or part-time, has made a
pledge or a gift to Annual Fund. That fact
speaks louder than words about the
commitment of our faculty and staff. It's
also not the norm. The national average of
faculty/staff participation at NAIS
(National Association of Independent
Schools) schools is only 69%.
Annual Fund Team in Place
Annual Fund Co-Chairs Mary Etzel
and Mindy Bowman have assembled their team
to help with this year's Fly With the
Eagles campaign.
The Steering Committee is organized to plan
Annual Fund events including the pizza
parties for classes that reach 100%
participation, the Faculty Thank You Lunch
and family-fun-filled Thank You/Halloween
Party (see below) planned for
October 31, to which all families
are invited.
Class Captains are the go-to people in each
class who will answer questions about Annual
Fund and make reminder calls to those who
have not made a pledge by the last week of
October. If you would like to join either of
these groups, please contact the co-chairs.

Big Bouncer at Annual Fund Thank You
Party
No not the muscle-bound kind, the
kind you bounce around on! A 31-foot bouncy
obstacle course, in fact. The Annual Fund
Thank You Party is set for October 31,
Halloween Day, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at a
local airplane hangar (Fly with the
Eagles). All school families are
invited. In addition to the bouncer obstacle
course, there will be a costume parade,
costume contest, relays, crafts, Halloween
photo opportunities and a special Halloween
story from Mr. Patterson. Mark your
calendars now!
This year's Annual Fund goal is 100%
participation among school families at
whatever level they are able. All families
who have made a pledge or gift to Annual
Fund will be entered in a drawing for a
half-hour airplane flight around the Capitol
City, courtesy of the Etzel family. There
will be two drawings and two winners - three
passengers per flight. One passenger must be
a parent.
Watch for more Annual Fund information next
week.

TCS Families - Who We Are |
Carolyn
(left) and John (right) V. were on
their way from their home in California to visit John's
family in Leavenworth several years ago. Carolyn had
never been to Kansas before. She remembers driving
through Topeka and marveling, "There are only three
exits!" It was May, green and beautiful, she recalls,
and she could see the capitol from the highway. She
distinctly remembers saying, "I could live here!
The V. do live here now, and son
Tyler (below right) is a seventh
grader at Topeka Collegiate. Carolyn works in IT at
the Coast Guard Pay and Personnel Center; John is in
IT at Stormont-Vail Health Center.

The family moved to Topeka in 2002. Tyler went to
public school, but his parents were not satisfied
with the quality of his math and writing
instruction. He transferred to TCS last year.
Carolyn says it didn't take long for her to make the
decision to switch schools. She met Mrs. Moyer on
her first visit to Collegiate ("She had me at
hello!"), then Mrs. Hoyt and Mr. MacDonald. It's
been good news ever since. "Every teacher is top
notch," she raves. "I would be in despair if we
didn't have this (educational) option. I feel so
good about Tyler's future now."
We're glad you're here, V. family!

At Topeka High School: Former Players to Discuss
THS's Segregated Basketball Team -- Thursday, October 15 |
|
In the days before the
landmark Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board of
Education, the Topeka High School classrooms were
integrated but the ball court was segregated. Topeka
High had two basketball teams: the Trojans, an
all-white team and the Ramblers, an all-black team.
The experiences of these "separate but equal" teams
will be documented by those that played for both
Topeka High squads during this period of time. The
Shawnee County Historical Society and the Topeka
High School Historical Society will hold a trip down
memory lane with some of the former players.
Scheduled to appear are: Dean Smith, Naismith
Basketball Hall of Fame coach of North Carolina,
Jack Alexander, Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten, Don
Redmon, Bob Taggart and Dick Ridley on
Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the
Topeka High School cafeteria. The public is invited
to share in recalling these times and identifying
with this distinctive heritage. The panel will be
moderated by Mark Elliott of WIBW Radio. Admission
is free.

Kehres Cares |
|

Words are powerful
and leave a lasting impression on the hearts of our
youth. How we talk to our children influences how they
develop as young men and women. Words really do make a
difference.
We know how terrific our children are, but sometimes we
forget to tell them. Giving our children a verbal
reminder will reinforce their confidence and
self-esteem. Some of the greatest things we can say to
our children are:
1. You can be anything you want to be in life.
2. I believe in you.
3. You can count on me.
4. That's okay....how can you learn from that?
5. I love you forever.
Positive talk is powerful!
Take the time to tell someone
today how much you care.

The mission of Topeka Collegiate School includes
responsible citizenship through a commitment to
humanitarian ideals. We discuss compassion, sharing,
responsibility, and respect for others as part of
our character development program.
The middle school community service program provides
an opportunity for all 6th, 7th and 8th grade
students to reach out to the broader community with
a caring spirit and an active willingness to serve.
Each class will be involved with a different project

her classmates in Mrs. Van Aalst's class.
Mr. Patterson and
seventh grader Max

as a teepee pole. The school's teepee poles
were damaged in a wind storm several years ago
during the year of Native American cultural study.
The teepee itself was not seriously damaged.
Mr. Patterson cut down this young cedar tree on his
land and brought it to school with the idea of
teaching middle school students to make teepee poles
the way Native Americans did. The goal is to raise
the teepee again.
Sixth grader Neha T. shortly after
she performed a traditional Indian dance at this
year's Indiafest. Many Topeka Collegiate families
joined in this annual celebration of Indian culture
which benefits a local charity. This year, Florence
Crittenton Services received the proceeds of the
festival.

From the Health Room: |
There has been a voluntary recall
on more than 20 children's and infant's Tylenol
medications, mostly liquid. The Health Room here at
school has mostly generic acetaminophen and one box of
Tylenol Meltaways that was not effected by the recall.
Please refer to the statement by Tylenol below and go to
www.tylenol.com for a complete listing of lot
numbers to compare to your medicine at home.
"You may have heard that McNeil Consumer Healthcare (the
makers of TYLENOL®) is voluntarily recalling certain
lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products
that were manufactured between April, 2008 and June,
2008. All products manufactured met internal
specifications. However, the company is implementing
this recall because during this period, an unused
portion of one inactive ingredient did not meet all
quality standards. Therefore, as a precautionary
measure, it was decided to recall all Children's and
Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products listed below, which
were made during this time.
Parents and caregivers who
have questions or concerns should contact their
child's health care provider or our consumer call
center at 1-800-962-5357 (available Monday-Friday 8
a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time). Consumers can find the
lot numbers on the bottom of the box containing the
liquid product and also on the sticker that
surrounds the product bottle. The lot numbers of the
affected products are listed below.
These actions do not apply to
Children's TYLENOL® Meltaways and Junior Strength
TYLENOL® Meltaways. The voluntary recall applies
only to select lots of Children's and Infants'
TYLENOL® liquid products."

Box
Tops for Education -- For each Box Tops 4 Education coupon
you clip and turn in to the office, TCS receives 10 cents. The
Box Tops logo can be found on hundreds of participating brands
from diapers to frozen vegetables to disposable bags. And if
you shop online at the Box Tops marketplace, a portion of every
qualifying purchase (up to 22%) is donated to our school at no
extra cost to you. Participating online stores include GapKids,
Pottery Barn, Hotels.com, and Lands' End. During the 2008-2009
school year, your contributions earned our school $748.26!

container in the school's mail room, across the hall from the
office.

Dillons grocery store merchandise cards are available for
purchase for $20, $50 and $100 each in the school office.
The cards may be used at any Dillon's store for merchandise
including prescriptions and gas.
For every card you buy, Topeka Collegiate receives a six
percent rebate. For every $1,000 of Dillons cards we
sell, the school receives $60, for example. The 6%
rebate will go in to the Eagles Flight Fund, which will
be used to support our school's operating budget. Cards
may be purchased in the office.
The Dillons card is like cash. It buys a full $20 worth
of groceries or gas, but cannot be replaced if it is
lost and is not reloadable.

TCS Quiz Answer:
The correct answer is 2. SeaCamp is one
of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences for our 8th
