TCS Students Honored for Helping Others
Topeka Collegiate middle school students are the 2009 Volunteers of the Year!
Middle school students were honored today, in the 17 Years and Younger category,
for their year-long, twice-a-month volunteer service to Let's Help at the By the
People For the People Volunteer Awards Luncheon sponsored by United Way. Student
Council President Maria Kingfisher (center right) and Vice President Irene
Nicolae (center left) accepted the honor on behalf of their fellow students,
along with Assistant Head of School Carl Tillona.
In nominating the students for this honor, Let's Help's Karen Taylor (left)
said, "It was refreshing to have young minds volunteer. They were continually
coming up with new ways to make the process faster, easier, and more
efficient...We all believed this would be a 'win-win' situation and our beliefs
were confirmed. The students have shared their Let's Help experiences with
others at school, at home with their parents and siblings, their neighbors, and
many others. When the volunteers are our young citizens we know we have opened a
new door for them to participate in helping those less fortunate."
As part of their volunteer work, students collected and distributed holiday
gifts at Let's Help, assembled books, sorted cans of food and addressed
envelopes, among other things.
We are very proud of our sixth, seventh and eighth graders for demonstrating
their commitment to humanitarian ideals, one of the cornerstones of our school's
mission. Fostering the habit of community service is one way Topeka Collegiate
is equipping the next generation of leaders with skills for life.
