The 24th annual MATHCOUNTS Regional Competition was Feb. 10 at The University of Kansas School of Engineering in Lawrence.
Students from middle schools in Topeka and Lawrence competed in a timed mathematics competition that emphasized individual and team skills. Volunteers from the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers and faculty and students from the KU School of Engineering administered the competition.
The top teams were: first place — Topeka Collegiate School, Phyllis Hoyt, coach, and David McCoy, assistant coach; team members, Joel Billinger, Nicky Henriquez, Daniel Kennedy and David Wang; second place — Shawnee Heights Middle School, Suzanne Jordan, coach; team members Rian Brown, Kaitlyn Burton, Ellie Steuart and Matt Tobaben; third place — Washburn Rural Middle School, Betsy Wiens, coach, and Jo Marie Rozzelle, assistant coach; team members Tyler Bodenhammer, Matthew Gladfelter, Sydney Ho and Taylor Starkebaum.
The top finishing individuals were: first place, Daniel Kennedy, Topeka Collegiate School; second place, David Wang, Topeka Collegiate School; third place, Nicky Henriquez, Topeka Collegiate School; fourth place, Rian Brown, Shawnee Heights Middle School; fifth place, Ellie Steuart, Shawnee Heights Middle School; and sixth place Matt Tobaben, Shawnee Heights Middle School.
The top four individuals were awarded a $1,000 scholarship by KU's School of Engineering.
