The Lower School

The Lower School offers a comprehensive and exciting learning experience for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth. Driven by Topeka Collegiate’s mission statement, the academic program seeks to prepare students for the challenges and complexities of an ever-changing world. The students in the Lower School are provided the groundwork necessary for academic and personal success. The foundation skills of learning to read well, to write clearly, to reason soundly, and to speak effectively are stressed. Creative expression is encouraged, and responsible, effective study habits are developed. The Lower School stresses academic excellence, with a balance of enrichment opportunities and an emphasis on character development. The program provides a strong foundation for a child’s total education in a challenging yet supportive environment.
The curriculum offers a variety of exciting developmentally appropriate learning experiences and is designed to encourage each student to achieve his or her potential. Students are challenged to develop intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning. Small class size affords the opportunity for all students to participate, accept responsibility, and develop independence. Organizational skills and study habits are nurtured, and students are expected to accept increased responsibilities in both social and academic situations as they progress through the Lower School.

The Lower School faculty members value students as independent thinkers and encourage developing knowledge and student contributions in all areas. Teachers link instruction to the needs, interests, and strengths of students, as well as their social and emotional development. The faculty capitalize on their own expertise as they enhance the curriculum to provide active, social, and creative learning opportunities, being alert to student styles and intelligences.
Exciting lessons in language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science topics help students make meaningful connections and enhance retention of the core curricular units of study. Students are guided to take the responsibility for the organization and completion of their assignments in preparation for the advanced program that awaits them in Middle School.
The curriculum is designed to not only develop critical thinking and problem-solving, but to create a smooth transition from one grade to the next. The curriculum clearly exceeds Kansas State Standards. In addition to reading, writing, and mathematics, the Lower School classes complete a full grade level course in science and social studies.

Regularly scheduled classes in music, art, computer, physical education, and library complete the core curriculum. Field trips throughout the school year complement the course of study. World language instruction, beginning with Spanish in Kindergarten, continues with increasing frequency and fluency through fifth grade.
The students in the Lower School learn to work together as a community with respect for each other and with pride in their accomplishments. Our goal is to inspire Collegiate students to be responsible citizens and life long-learners.
